  1. when i say that eros love would lead to a happier life, i mean that pursuing a romantic, passionate relationship with one other person would make one happier than one making their own concern with perpetuating agape love. also, it is not meant that one will solely be using one love, but placing a higher value on one of the loves, and if given th option between spending time with a significant other and giving time to helping others, one would choose time with a signifiacant other. and by agape love it is meant that treating all equally, not judging, and providing people with what they need not what they deserve.
  2. I have an upcoming paper and debate for a class on Eros vs Agape love. The main question is which will lead an individual to living a happier life. So I have a few questions: does Rand ever talk about either of these loves? and if so where can i find them? in which of her books? does anyone know of any other works which argue for one or the other? internet, articles, other books. and does anyone have any ideas they would like to share regarding the issue? I'm arguing that Eros love would leave one to a happier more fulfilling life, so any arguments in favor of that are greatly appreciated.
  3. I have some questions regarding this topic. first, is education not a right? public schools, as far as i know, were set up so that everyone would atleast have a chance at an education. i would think that we are all entitled to an education because it trains us to think, which we must do to live. then, how do we insure that everyone gets an education without a public school system? i understand that you then choose a school, and that if you dont have enough money, another school will open and cost less(offer the best education for the lowest price). but what about all the families who dont pay taxes, and yet they still have children going to school? how do we make sure that the families barely surviving get an education? im just wondering, if there were no public school systems, how do we make sure that everyone gets an education?
  4. He's a long time chairmember of the Senate's Foreign Relations Commitee. I believe it counts for something though I can't cite any specific examples where he has greatly effected are foreign policy. but hey it's still better than "I can see Russia from my state"
  5. Look at it this way, very few people will be able to play the race card now. For instance, a black person can't say that "the man" is keeping them down... they are the man. I think this election shows that America really CAN be the land of oppurtunity. That said, I'm not a big fan of Obama, seeing as how his tax plan raises my families taxes. Is it possible that we are all overreacting to Obama's election? how much can he really do to us or take away from us. the most i think he can do is continue the slow process of taking away rights and freedoms for "protection" also, look at the bright side. Biden in office. He is one of the smartest people on the topic of foreign relations. so there might be a silver lining

    Capitalism

Hi, this is my first post on this site though I have been reading everything here for the past couple weeks. I'm an aspiring objectivist I guess (in that I don't completely understand all of it yet). But I do believe in a completely free capitalist economy. I was having an interesting little argument on the current issues in the American economy, and I said that a complete capitalist economy is the best way to go about it. The person refuted by stating that a complete communist society works too, but we'll never get to one side completely. Then I said Communism ignores human nature, for competition and being better is what drives us. Then they said that complete capitalism ignores human nature. how so? apparently we do not like to see others fail, its just a shame, and i guess we can describe it as pity or sympathy. That's why most of us give change to a bum on the street. so my question is: is it really human nature to not want to see someone fail? I mean I personally don't care if others fail, its the way things have to go. Like I said, I'm new to this whole thinking thing. I just graduated high school and now I'm trying to understand... Please say anything you'd like to.
