  1. My top value was a classics major at Baylor. She did the Greek Institute. Her recolection bounces between smiling and sighing to shivering and crying nevermore. She basically lived ancient Greek and said the only that kept her sane was playing videogames. She spent so much time and energy focusing on Greek she had to do something to take a forced mental break.Even though it's been years she still has a good grasp of Greek and Latin. All I can say from her recolections, I can only wish you the best of logic. What's your major?
  2. Troxel v Granville decided a few years ago that says grandparents have no special rights over anyone else. The law in Washington used to be that the parent was forced to give visitation rights to grandparents unless there was a darm compelling reason not to. If I remember correctly, the grandparents and the mother had a great deal of animosity and hence wanted them to have no bearing over the child. So, the court took the middle ground and decided that grandparents technically have the same rights as anyone who petitions a court for visitation. Though the rub is the parent has to show why their would be an adverse effect to the grandchild in order to deny access. Otherwise, visitation is granted almost by default. Over everything else, I hate the idea of the state being able to force me to expose my children to people or things. So I'd have to err on the side of the parents on this one.
  3. Martin, don't ever give up trying to get back. Every one of my current employees is an immigrant. It's funny, but of the last 8 or 9 people I've hired all came from El Salvador, Mexico, Pakistan, India, and China. Almost all of them have either gone on to management positions or ran with the American Dream and own their own businesses. Maybe it's a stereotype of native Americans but I've found in my experience that immigrants have a better or more stark realization of what opportunities are here than your "average" ( I hate using that word but can't think of a better one right now) native. I like to think that I've been afforded the opportunity to hire the best and brightest the world has to offer. There are enough people here who think like me that care about getting motivated intelligent people regardless of where they are from. Eventually that someone will hire and sponsor you. Just remember to not the the people at the immigration department get you down.
  4. I grew up with my parents listening to big band and my sisters listened to either folk or acid rock. (hey, it was the early 70's) I was a bluegrass fan but never appreciated folk until I moved to Austin. I exposed myself to tons of singer/songwriters and developed an appreciation of the creative process that goes into playing a guitar. I've played a trombone for 20 years so I've got a pretty good love of jazz and dixieland. Though most recently I've picked up the ukulele. It's surprising how much you can get out of an instrument that small. You really do have to finesse the sound out of it but once you do, it's a very nice sound. It can be made to sound like a mandolin so I've done some Hawaiian/bluegrass with it.
  5. Any Matt Groening cartoon will make the occasional jab/reference. The Futurama episode where they go into the sewers beneath the city. One of the mutants is explaining that all they have is what is flushed down from above. Like alligators, copies of Atlas Shrugged, and something else I can't remember. From interview I saw about the Ayn Rand Daycare segment, thay pull out Maggie's pacifier to reinforce that it's up to her as an individual to cope and not to rely on the pacifier. Or some such explanation.
  6. Road Trip used to equal vacations for me. My father would load the whole clan into the Vista Cruiser and we'd drive for two weeks. I did manage to see or camp in 49 states by the time I was 18. Which is nice. I find driving non-stop from Houston to El Paso or to Panama City not that weird. Though my favorite is to take breaks by stopping at corny roadside attractions. You get to find some interesting people and things that way. Plus always asking locals where a good place to camp yields some very nice not-in-the-guidebooks sites.
  7. I wish I knew where these came from but a friend emailed these to me a very long time ago. Objectivist Pick-up Lines Universal "If you turn me down, you're anti-man!" "Say, there should have been a chapter in the Romantic Manifesto about your ass!" "What isn't your sign?" "Let me show you what sex qua sex can be." "Why don't you get undressed so I can check your premises?" "Wanna come over to my place and see my Ilona etchings?" "Did you know that nakedness is the highest form of psychological visibility?" "You and I could create a whole other benevolent universe..." "Wow...when they made you they sure didn't omit any measurements!" Girl to Guy "Brother, you're asking for it!" Guy to Girl "Wanna let me come over and break your fireplace?" (Guy is naked) "What do you mean it's not big enough? It's not called the Taggart Transcontinental for nothing!" "Okay, enough epistemology. How'd you like to grasp something a bit more physical?" "Yeah baby. It is made of Rearden Metal." "You're certainly practicing the Virtue Of Sexiness tonight."
  8. That's a capital idea. I have come to really enjoy wine as well as cooking. I find the creative process behind coming up with new dishes very relaxing.
  9. Congrats on finishing you BA. Celebration for me used to be about wine and cigars with 2 of my best friends who owned a wine and cigar shop respectively. Now, to celebrate I prefer having a nice dinner with my fiance at one of our favorite restaurants. My work and her law school we don't have alot of time together. Doing nothing but sitting together and talking over fondue is a real treat for us. I think the escense of celebration is about engaging in an affirming and rewarding activity that we normally woulnd't. Spending time with my top value means more to me than anything else. Since I used to entertain clients with expesive dinners etc, high dollar restaurants don't do much for me.Same for expensive wine and cigars.
