  1. Palin is obviously not responsible for this—the shooter is—but when she does things like posting a map with crosshairs across the districts of certain members of Congress and uses gun-related language like "Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!", it may lead mentally unstable people like today's shooter to believe she's endorsing such actions. I would personally avoid language and imagery like that entirely. It's getting way too close to an actual threat for my taste. I hope Giffords makes a full recovery. I disagree with her politically on more than one point, but she's far from the worst member of Congress and I wouldn't wish this sort of action on anyone.
  2. Another issue with the radiation is that while the machines are operating normally it may be a low level, if they malfunction, it's possible for them to deliver much higher doses of radiation. An example of this sort of thing happening is Therac-25, a radiation therapy machine that malfunctioned, exposing at least six patients to 100 times the intended dose of radiation, killing three of them. Peter Rez, a physics professor at Arizona State University, and one of the people often being quoted as saying that the scanners are safe, also said, "However, it's a mechanically scanned system, and if the scanning mechanism were to jam, something which is quite possible, then one could get a very high-level dose". He also said that the chance of getting fatal cancer from them is 1 in 30 million. Approximately 560 million people fly per year in the U.S.
  3. Rangel has been doing this for years. Nearly every year he introduces at least one version of a military draft reinstatement bill. While he claims to oppose a volunteer army and want the return of a draft, he seems to do it as a political stunt most of the time, as even he generally votes against his own bill in the end.
  4. Actually, most online ads pay for both impressions (views) and clicks. Clicks pay considerably more, and, at least with Google AdSense, the amount of money paid for each thousand impressions is based on your click through ratio for the day. The more people clicking, the more you get paid for those who just view.
  5. My browser blocks popups and I use FlashBlock for security and performance reasons, but I don't use AdBlock or any of its variants. I used to, but I don't now. If there isn't a TOS requiring one to view ads, I don't think it's immoral to block them, but as someone who runs several ad-supported websites, I understand the difficulty of making much money with so many people blocking ads, and so when viewing another ad-supported website which I value, I want to pay for my access via the means they've made available—viewing advertisements.
  6. You're right, I missed that. (I had searched the book for "church" on Amazon, but did not search for related terms such as "minister".) It does not change anything, though.
  7. The phrasing of the sentence suggests mockery, not respect. The sentence is contrasting what he considers holy with what most people consider holy, not two things that he considers holy. I see no mention of Eddie attending church. The only specific mention of a character attending church is regarding Dagny being sent to church while growing up:
  8. I'm not sure what makes you think this—the only mention of the Bible in Atlas Shrugged that I'm aware of is the following: That indicates to me that he has little regard for the Bible.
  9. The felony charges would be against the person issuing the marriage license, not the recipients, apparently. And felonies can absolutely be a state-level crime.
  10. Outside of my family, the majority of the people I've known for the past eight years or so steal software, music and movies without even considering it to be theft. If they're very blatant about it, I may say something once, otherwise I only do if they try to give me copies of the things they've stolen, or want me to give them a copy of music or software I've purchased. With regard to friends playing stolen music—you're free to disallow it in your own car or home. If you're riding in their car or are at their house and they're playing stolen music, that's their problem. I would personally reconsider whether I want to remain close friends with someone who does not respect the intellectual property rights of others, however.
  11. I live in Arizona, about thirty miles from the border. I am very close to several drug smuggling routes, and coyotes with large groups of immigrants pass through the area somewhat frequently as well. The barbed wire fence around my property is frequently damaged by groups of people bending it down to cross over. In the past four years, only three groups of people have come to my door asking for food or water, but judging by footprints and the number of times the fence has been damaged, hundreds have passed through my property. In the past year, nearly every one of my neighbors in a several mile radius has had their house broken into and robbed by people going south to the border. That fact, coupled with the fact that Border Patrol has captured a few of them before they made it back to Mexico, has indicated that the robberies are almost always being done by drug smugglers and coyotes who, having dropped off their loads of drugs or people, are returning to Mexico and want to steal valuables along the way to sell back home. More recently, about a month ago, a rancher about ten miles from where I live was murdered on his ranch by what the Sherrif's department suspects was a Mexican drug cartel scout—this has been in the news of late and was unfortunately used by Arizona politicians to push this immigration law into place. I have no issue with great numbers of immigrants entering the country, but the majority of those who are doing so now do it in a way that violates the property rights of those living in border regions. In order to avoid Border Patrol, they avoid roads with public access and instead cut through private property, often causing damage and leaving trash all around. Allowing much easier access via official ports of entry would remove the need for people to sneak in and trespass. Similarly, legalization of all drugs in the U.S. would almost immediately cut the flow of drug smugglers through the area. There are likely to still be some people bypassing the official ports of entry—human traffickers and other criminals who may have been denied legal entry—but with the greatly reduced load, Border Patrol would be able to handle those smaller numbers of entrants more easily.
  12. Regarding megapixels and quality of image: generally the most important factor is the quality of the lens. The number of megapixels affect the maximum size at which you can output the image. However, the physical dimensions of the sensor also affect quality: the greater the area, the less noise in the image, especially with longer exposures. Many digital cameras have a smaller sensor area than what 35mm film provided. I've recently upgraded to a camera with a full frame sensor (as in, full 35mm), and that, along with sensor technology improvements that have taken place since the time I bought my previous camera, does a remarkable job in reducing the amount of noise.
