  1. I was watching a documentary on gangs in urban areas...and one of them made the remark that part of the reason they were in a gang was that "working at McDonalds wasn't going to cut it." Well, a fast food worker isn't risking his freedom or life every day. Besides, he could just report to the police that the thug driving the stolen Mercedes is a criminal, and effectively put him behind bars. In that way, criminals are staking everything on the non-snitching nature of others. Thoughts?
  2. I has major dissapoint. The acting looks pretty bad..even in the preview. The progression/diologue of that trailer was choppy. I might not watch this at all. I'm still mad/confused that Peikoff sold the rights...
  3. what do you think? If it's someone's job to pick up some trash I might drop, say at a bus station, is it worth my while to throw it out in a can? (extrapolations of this principle apply--putting the weights back at the gym, not being wasteful with company products, etc.)
  4. I don't mind this, actually...because being a libertarian refers to a set of political views. The world "libertarian" generally does what I want it to. (free market, a small republic, full economic/social freedoms, a defensive military and police force, etc. I don't agree with a lot of libertarians as such on many things, but I think their political views are close to ours. In others areas they may be bad (read: pragmatism, relativism, etc.) but their political beliefs are broadly the same with some exceptions (foreign policy)
  5. he calls our political views libertarian (w/caveat) @33:53, something that made me happy/I have done for years much to some of your capital "O"ist chagrin
  6. I stopped after about 20 seconds. It didn't look like it was going to be constructive or interesting, especially given the interaction you mentioned.
  7. Those are two different things. On the one hand, you could keep your objectivism entirely to yourself. Or you could become a street promoter. Blogging is a happy medium. If you believe in keeping it entirely to yourself, do you also never vote? Or advocate ideas to others? The two are inconsistent.
  8. Wow, relax? Jesus. I made a remark, explained my point, and then you immediately insulted my posts and my blog. Of course you aren't obligated to blog...but it has a similar rational to voting. You are trying to affect change in the world you live in, even if your particular contribution is small.
  9. It's in your self interest. It's like advocating lower/no taxes, just on a larger scale.
  10. Yeah I concur...I think having a casual approach makes it more likely stay active. I was particularly inspired to blog after a comment by Yaron Brook on what one can do to promote objectivism.
  11. Well? It's free on websites like Wordpress.com, it takes 5 minutes a day, and is an easy and fun way to promote objectivism. I recommend it.
  12. I'm young enough to guess you might be onto something...there was a similar style in the Phil Donahue interview
  13. maaybe, but I doubt it. I think he was trying to keep it basic and simple.

  15. Do you watch the ARCTV videos? Yaron is usually amazingly cogent. I'd agree though that this wasn't his best interview.
  16. you have to admit that was a really good point though
  17. Thanks for the article. I think there definitely will be Tea Party activism, even if a theocon president is elected in 2012. I think it's a great vehicle for people who are new to activism.
  18. "America is built on what is best for man. The Founding Fathers got it right."
  19. He's probably a decent heavyweight, but I strongly doubt he's the best in the world. How would we know? He hasn't fought any of the elite UFC fighters. He's fought former champs, and burn outs. Big deal. I'd bet he'd do okay in the UFC, but he seems waay hyped to me. I would like to see how he does in a real fight with current fighters.
  20. I'm reading "The Psychology of Self Esteem" by Branden right now. It was apparently written during the 60's when he still agreed with objectivism, and the book itself is consonant with objectivist philosophy. There is some really good content in there, although a lot of it will be just review for you if you are already well acquainted with objectivism.
  21. I'm not sure how I feel about this Assange..right now I think I like him. I liked him more when I heard this. +1 for not taking civilization for granted
  22. I always find it funny when millionaires like Chomsky or Moore tell us how badly the rich exploit us. Or when mutli-billionaires only give away half of their fortune..if you follow that logic, why not all of it? In fact, why not go to Africa?
