  1. I don't propose anything of the sort. Reality, in order to be commanded, requires obedience. But if someone didn't want want to command reality, they could just drift, etc. My question is...is obligation a feature of philosophy? Because there is such a thing as a promise, but obligations sound like "duty" ethics.
  2. Do you think there is such a thing as obligation? Reality does dictate, but is anyone obligated to comply?
  3. I have a thought that there are many more wildly successful people who are inspired by AR than we know of. Look at the economic views that the Forbes 400 have. I'd wager that over 90% believe in the crazy idea that market/their money is best off not being managed by the guvment. edit: to bolster my point- "I know from talking to a lot of Fortune 500 C.E.O.’s that Atlas Shrugged has had a significant effect on their business decisions, even if they don’t agree with all of Ayn Rand’s ideas." Allison
  4. interesting note: In one scene, you can see a copy of "The Virtue of Selfishness" on his bookshelf. Hah. Good show.
  5. "Rand, a former Hollywood screenwriter herself, began writing her own screenplay, but died in 1982 with only one-third of it finished. She left her estate, including the film rights to Atlas Shrugged, to her student Leonard Peikoff, who sold an option to Michael Jaffe and Ed Snider. Peikoff would not approve the script they wrote, and the deal fell through. In 1992, investor John Aglialoro bought an option to produce the film, paying Peikoff over $1 million for full creative control." I'm wondering why Peikoff would do this. Anyone have any insights?
  6. Why do these people have the right for this book to film project? I read somewhere that Peikoff sold it to them, but I can't fathom as to why. Anyone care to clarify this for me?
  7. One quote I like that addresses problems is: "The bigger the problem, the more action needs to be taken." People get frustrated because their actions don't match up with what they know they need. You know at some level that you need to start taking some dramatic, constructive action. You have not. The sooner you do, the better. As soon as you start on this path, you will feel better and better. Also, don't commit suicide. As they say, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
  8. I'll bet there are lots of objectivists, or former objectivists in Keene, New Hampshire. I doubt there would be many jobs, but in terms of a community of activists, that's about the best you'll find. Irvine, California is where the Ayn Rand Institute is. There'd be jobs there, and a warm climate to boot. Washington D.C. has David Kelley's objectivist group, The Atlas Society. New York City would probably have lots just by the law of averages.
  9. this is from Ron Paul's book "The Revolution" "I spoke with Greenspan at a special event that took place just before he was to speak in front of the House Banking Committee. At this even congressmen had a chance to meet and have their pictures taken with the Fed chairman. I decided to bring along my original copy of his 1966 article from the Ojbectivist Newsletter called "Gold and Economic Freedom," an outstanding piece in which he laid out the economic and moral case for a commidity-based monetary system as against a fiat paper system. He graciously agreed to sign it for me. As he was doing so, I asked if he wanted to write a disclaimer on the article. He replied good-naturedly that he had recently reread the piece and that he would not change a word of it. I found that fascinating: could it be that, in his heart of hearts, Greenspan still believed in the bulletproof logic of that classic article?" Yep, he's a saboteur.
  10. I like Carlin's stuff on religion..but I was really disappointed by his "American Dream" rant/some of his other socialistic commentary. Similar to Chomsky, he uses himself as a conduit for hundreds of years of stored guilt, and if you dare say a word against him, you must be evil. It's dogmatic and dishonest to argue from intimidation.
  11. 10/21/10 video of Bill Maher defending..gasp..civilization..to Oliver Stone...hahaha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdCpHapPIJY

  13. This is such a common claim by would be AR hateraders that I feel it should be addressed. -she once wanted to (did?) smoke marijuana -she continued to promote Patterson's and Mises's work despite their differences -she allowed Rothbard back into her discussion groups despite a previous break -she admired philosophers Locke, Aquinas, the FF's, etc. in spite of their religiosity -she considered homosexuals she knew to be objectivists, despite her dislike of their sexuality I was particularly glad to hear read this fact..I'm not gay still Ayn Rand's hostility towards homosexuality had always bothered me. I found this out from her wikipedia page.
  14. I actually tried to find that website but did not. I will booknote it. My bad.
  15. ..so that they don't depend on you for financial assistance? Or, if that's too easy, what if they had not responsibly prepared for retirement/old age, and now expect you to help them? Should you, even if you share few values? What do you think/?
  16. Clearly, objectivism is a front for the illuminati. This website has proof: http://illuminati-order.com/ but for reals...I think I might support the illuminati because they: -seem to be pro-reason/science/atheism -seem to be pro-capitalism/wealth -seem to be pro-self interest/self improvement -seem to be monocultural
  17. Mr Cropper Qtronrobespierre Stefbot (claims to be %90 Oist) thelegalimmigrant05 Nine9s Just thought I'd leave these here for anyone who hasn't seen them. Many of of their/your videos are educational or entertaining. Feel feel to post your thoughts on these vloggers, if you have any.
  18. thread thus far is full of lol and win, let me contribute. Hipsters might have to actually start reading all the books they've claimed to of read.
  19. No spoilers. I went to see this moving partly because, to my knowledge, there was nothing better playing, and partly because I somewhat enjoyed the first one. I would not recommend it. It wasn't particularly bad, but it wasn't particularly good. There were a lot of poorly constructed elements I couldn't let slide. It's an Oliver Stone movie, so I was curious to see if there were any leftist implications. There weren't many. At one point the young protagonist asks a rich banker (who is the enemy, of course): "What's your number? How much money do you need before you can retire?" The banker replies, as the camera dramatically zooms into his face "More." I think we the viewers were supposed to be disgusted by this statement, but my reaction was one more of approval. As the blog Voices for Reason put it..making money is like walking. Wanting progressively more values in your life is a part of being alive and ambition really is more moral than compassion. Ambition is a primary virtue, and charity is a secondary virtue. The only other part I'll mention is at the end, where it is intimated that people of greed are like bubbles that pop, and when they do there is more room for other people. Great. Thanks but no thanks Mr. Stone.
  20. How many conservative congressman do you know of who want privatize social security? Honestly, I don't know much about him or his positions. The issues that I've heard him speak on I've agreed with him (ex. privatization, as demonstrated in the above video).
  21. True, he has some real faults..but he has far better views than many/most conservative politicians.
  22. Ronald E. Merrill thinks so in his book "The Ideas of Ayn Rand." Also, Rand described serial killer Hickman as a true "superman." Does anyone have any more information on this? Like someone who has read some of her earlier journal entries? I'd appreciate it.
