  1. Haha anti-american..funny, true, and sad. Thanks for your truth grenade.
  2. Couldn't you also then support libertarians, as long as you made your case clear? I'd agree they have little political power..but take for instance moving to New Hampshire and being part of the Free State Project. Is this a selfish, objective act? Or is it sanction and therefore sedition?
  3. I'm still a student of Objectivism. As I understand it..the argument against working with libertarians is that objectivism wants to remain distinct from harmful ideas which fringe libertarians support (anarchy, anti-military, etc.). But then why does Peikoff advocate voting for Obama, who other than his civil liberties/secularism, is one of the most vile, socialist presidents in our history? I know he said that the threat of religion was greater than the threat of socialism. But my main point is the following. He said objectivists shouldn't refrain from voting because both candidates are bad. But by that same (pragmatic(?!)) logic, shouldn't objectivists be friendly with libertarians since there is some good in libertarian politics? Truth bombs are welcome. Help clear this up for me.
  4. For the sake of argument, we're assuming that articial intelligence is possible. Another way of looking at the question is..was creating nuclear weaponry ultimately anti-human/evil, since it could very well lead to your own demise?
  5. I know that Objectivism is the very definition of humanistic..but does anyone on this forum have any insight on Objectivism's views on transhumanism? I'm not just talking about curing diseases or extending life. Should Objectivism encourage using technology to change a man's brain so much that it ceases to basically be biological? If man could create a godlike artificial intelligence that could solve problems/produce/create more effectively than man, would that be ethical?
  6. I see your point. You could create a number of scenarios to support that as well...like if you were living happily with your friends and family on a tropical island, and you knew the world was collapsing everywhere but your island, who would it benefit to go and help? It's the humanity that gets to me. Doesn't it seem inhumane to ignore the misery of strangers? That's the real question. Riddle me that, forum reader!
  7. Something I've been thinking about lately as I learn more about Objectivism is the definition of egoism..particularly when it comes to the line between selfishness and altruism. For example, there is some evil, horrible stuff happening to children in Africa right now. I guess the question I ask myself is how much of a blind eye should I have? My religious/altruistic upbringing complicates my ability to focus on my own happiness. You could argue, and you might, that it may be in my own self interest to go and try and help people. But on the other hand, of course I want to stay right here in US and enjoy prosperity and living my life to the fullest. I don't know, but I will figure it out. I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on the subject.
  8. I'm pretty much alone..I have one friend knows a bit about the philosophy, so I can talk to him. I still wish one mega-rich objectivist would decide to invite objectivists to come and live on his fleet of 400+ yachts. Mobile gulching. I went there.
  9. Hi, it's great to be here. I'm curious to know how many other people here are also the only objectivists they know? Or do you maybe have objectivist friends/spouses/children?
