  1. Good idea. They only have 71 members. I think the whole thing could be run over with Objectivists quite easily. It could be an Objectivist takeover. Never heard of one before. Takers?
  2. I knew you hadn't found this place by accident as you said in your introduction. I've seen you around, I even recognized your grammar. Haven't I seen you on the CheLives forum as well?
  3. I think it shows some promise, if it is a thing you want to pursue. I don't have any real recommendations. I write fiction, but my appreciation of poetry is largely subconcsious. Has anyone noticed that nobody who has criticized Ayn Rand's literary style has actually refered to any specific passage of her works? I'd like to see one person do it.
  4. The prior post here should be the definitive answer. The mass of facts that fly by in a single sentence from a troll is astounding. It is like fighting a 1st grader in math. That is assuming that some of these trolls are even really making an argument and not blowing time making trouble for trouble's sake. I've been posting at CapMag for awhile, and when a troll comes we swarm over it like flies on a corpse. The mod will come in later, yell at us for arguing with trolls, and 86 the troll. Seems to work well, by the time the mod gets to it, the troll has exposed himself quite clearly.
  5. Who is we? You really feel the need to get out and do something? Go to college and get a Phd in philosophy. That is needed first and above all. This is on the condition that philosophy even means anything as a profession in acedamia anymore. It might not, I don't know. Economics would be the next best thing.
  6. Notice there are a lot of sci-fi fans here. A must read is Fredric Brown's: From these Ashes. His Martians and Madness is pretty good as well.
  7. I'd say take a smaller scale job related to what you have studied, but that leaves you free enough to decide what you really want to do. (The smaller scale job should leave you freer to speak at the interviews as they will be more lax, and you won't care as much. And all you have to do is convey that you can do the work. As long as you can do it, no problem.) And you really, really have to be patient with yourself. Let me relate. I've been a cook for 19 years now. I started when I was 15, the same year I stopped going to school. At 18, I dropped what I had been pursuing (music). At 22 discovered Objectivism, decided to write as I had been doing as a child. At 27, decided to get practical, and went for an engineering degree. Dropped out after a year and a half with a 3.9 because I simply did not want to do it although I didn't realize it at the time. Drank for a year straight (never do this one!). That was 4 and half years ago. I am writing again...slowly. The whole time I've been serving food, and taking out garbage, blah, blah, blah because I refuse to consign the rest of my life to something I do not want to do. You want a career, an all consuming fire of passion, a single course, if I can gather from your posts. Decide what it is. Don't stop until you are there. BTW, the first part can be the hardest sometimes.
  8. There is a website that has the info on this crap. [url=http://www.proprights.org] I haven't been able to fish that much through the site because it is poorly organized, but I believe it is up for a city council vote from what I could gather.
  9. Spearmint, I'd have to be one of those 10%, I'd say I gulped that down as if of a dying thirst. It is a 60 page speech. And there is not a single rule of literature that AS violates by the inclusion of the speeches that makes it less of a piece of literature. It has certainly got a theme (the widest), the theme is ruthlessly carried out in a very detailed plot that is tied up entirely at the end, the characters are fully developed (and consistent, although that is the same point), and the style is (going to cheat here) excellent. If you ever care to do it as a mental exercise. Go through Galt's speech and (except for historical references that the reader will have to bring to the table) every point that is made in that speech has been acted out in the novel. It is almost like a mi- no, it is a lesson in epistemology. Concretes-abstractions-concretes. It has to be just a personal preference on your part. How about a thousand page novel with absolutely no dialogue at all? Why not?
  10. I live in King county, and it is Washington, not Oregon BTW. I saw a couple of signs that were incomprehensible on the side of a road, that related to this thing, but I did not know what it meant. I will certainly vote against it at the least. Funny that it would be tried here. Do you know how much freaking vegetation is up here? You are right about the lack of fight up here, Rexton, this is Democratic, latte booby land up here. Of course, we do have Tim Eyman.
