  1. Hey man! Welcome. Love the quote, by the way. You should put it as your signature. (Just go to My Controls and it's on the left) That is, if you want to of course. What about yourself? Are you in school? Have a job? How about hobbies? Just wondering...its always nice to learn about other cool people, such as yourself. Look forward to seeing your posts. Have a good evening, Zak
  2. I am willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially those on this forum. But that doesn't quell my curiosity. Zak
  3. Chinese Beatles Ford Dog Night The title is "seemingly pointless" questionnaire implying that it is not as pointless as it seems. Is it? Just wondering. Zak
  4. Who is this "we" you speak of? I certainly don't need to read any more of Nathaniel Branden than what was published under Ayn Rand's direct approval. But then again I am happy with who I am and where I am going. Why do you think that your problem (and solution) applies to everyone? Zak
  5. I'm sorry, but you seem to imply that Miss Rand can be read without question. That is not the case at all. You shoud question and valitdate everything both Miss Rand and Peikoff try to say. Miss Rand designated Peikoff as her heir and so I believe he is honest, unlike some others. If you meant question his honesty, I don't think that is necessary. If you meant question his conclusions, you absolutely should. And you should do the same with every other person you read or hear. That obviously includes Miss Rand. Zak
  6. I wrote something very similar to this for my English class last November. It was on what we want for Christmas. I said I wanted freedom, which mean we would have to go to a laissez-faire capitalist system. It was peer graded for a contest, and then it was given an actual score by the teacher. I got a 3 out of 5 for my peers, meaning average honors English writing. But I got a 90% from the teacher. It would have been higher, but I had some fragmented sentences because she said that she was reading them aloud to the class. I wanted mine to be like I was talking. The point is, I got an okay grade, even though my classmates hated it. I would give you a copy, but I only have a hard copy. I can't find it on my hard-drive. Anyway, your outline looks good, except for the note I made in the member essay's section. Zak
  7. You need to clarify point 4, b, ii. The origional theme to point 4, b is : However, later you say: This appears to contradict what you said above. I know it doesn't, but it appears to. What you mean to say is that one is allowed to die for a value if one can no longer go on living without it. By living, I mean living happily. The rest seems good. If you allow me to look at the final draft before it's due, I will see if I can do anything. Zak
  8. Okay, I think your logic is flawed. You should not address the rate at which Christianity is spreading (and yes I agree it is scary), but that is not WHY Christianity is bad. If Objectivism was spreading as fast, it would not be bad at all. If people started wearing shirts that say "Capitalism Is The Way!", they would have every right to get mad at you for wearing a "Socialism Forever" shirt. The fact that Christianity is bad has nothing at all to do with how fast it is being spread. It is bad because it idolizes self-sacrifice and altruism. It would still be bad if only one person believed in it. Zak
  9. If you can get a copy, try Calumet "K" by Merwin and Webster. It's out of print though. I had a hard time getting one. I asked for it for Christmas and my mom searched forever until she found a used copy at some random shop in the Midwest somewhere, like Illinois or Ohio. I also recommend Tom Clancy. His heroes are awesome. I like Rainbow 6, Without Remorse, and The Hunt for Red October. Most of his books in general are good. If you haven't already, read 1984 by George Orwell. I second the recommendations of Harry Potter, The Three Musketeers (though I gave up half way through The Count of Monte Cristo when I was in 8th grade), and James Bond. We the Living is also one of my favorite novels that doesn't get talked about a whole lot. It's cast into the shadow thrown by The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, but definitely worth reading. I started The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis and did not enjoy them at all. But perhaps you will. Also, though the philosophy is pretty deterministic and bad, Ender’s Game is a good read. Especially if you love characters that are really good at what they do. Anyway, I think I gave you all I can remember as far as good book go. Miss Rand blew my mind away (or rather allowed it to function as it should) with Atlas Shrugged. That was last fall and I haven’t stopped reading her since. I can hardly remember what I read before then. Zak
  10. I can't say that at all. I loved the story, the characters, and the philosophy. The characters are what make a story intriguing, not so much the actual plot. Obviously the plot has to be somewhat good, but I thought Atlas Shrugged's plot was awesome. If you want to make a movie that appeals to the public, do not do it with Atlas Shrugged. If the movie is good half as good as the book, the same people who would love the book will love the movie. Zak Edit for spelling
  11. What up dude? I'm sixteen also. Welcome to the forum! What do you like to do for fun? Happy Friday! Zak
  12. Hey. I was just asking what was good about Vonnegut because what I read on his website seemed quite anit-Objectivist. I was just wondering why curious_student liked both of them when they seem to have contradictory philosophies.
  13. Okay, I haven't read any Vonnegut, but I did a Google search on him, I'm always looking for good books/authors when I came across this on his website: As you will come to see, this view is extremely wrong. The world is rational and causal. I don't know why anyone would write about a world that wasn't, but I am utterly puzzled why you like it. Could you please elaborate on why it is that you like Vannegut? I am a curious, just like you. Zak
  14. Just because many people think something doesn't make it true.
  15. Where can I read the list? [edit: Okay never mind. I'm retarded.]
  16. Wow! That's quite a turnaround. Hope you enjoy the forum. What of Ayn Rand have you read? Welcome to the forum. Zak
  17. You think that we will evolve to lose free will? We will just become animals without volition?
  18. I believe so. Although, I'm not entirely sure why people should be able to empathize. What good would that do, unless they want an "emotional blank check"? What is most likely is people want others to be more sympathetic, but would rather ask for empathy because it sounds better. Zak
  19. Okay, I think I may be able to help. My English teacher was talking about this a while ago. She said that one of the problems was people were not "emphathetic" any more. I took that to mean sympathetic and argued with her. It came down to this. Empathy is being able to relate to the person. You don't have to care about them or pity them, you just have to know why they did what they did. For instance, if someone gets offered drugs and takes them, you can emphasize with the being offered. That doesn't mean you pity them for taking the drugs. Maybe that helps. Zak
  20. Ha ha. I took one for school. One of the questions was "Do you do what's logical or what is right?" I asked the girl sitting next to me "Uh...is there a difference?" She was like "Yeah." "Like what?" "If you don't see a difference, put logical." I thought it was pretty funny. I'm still waiting for her to come up with an example that is right and illogical. Jennifer, that is pretty funny for an Objectivist to be more "feeling", but it makes perfect sense when you examine the cause. I had to take an "intelligences" test the other day. I felt kind of wierd answering that I rely on my emotions. I know why my emotions are what they are, so I put logic. Happy Friday everybody! Zak
  21. Yeah, that's exactly how I felt. I was told it was depressing before I read it, but I didn't find the end depressing. It is the only book that made me cry when I finished it. It was not because I was depressed, but rather because I was so happy at the possibilities freedom holds. I did find Leo's personality shift depressing. Zak
  22. INTJ. We had to do one for school a while ago. It was alot longer than this one though, it took over an hour.
  23. I was talking about the new one. When we were watching it ,my mom mentioned something about an older version that she liked, but she couldn't recall it too well. I should watch the old one. Zak
  24. Definitely do. This website is actually dedicated to Ayn Rand's philosophy, Objectivism, and these are two of her fiction books. Atlas Shrugged is my favorite book. It's a bit long, but more than worth it's weight in gold. Holy smokes! That is quite amazing. I'm studying Spanish right now, but I'll have three years at the end of this year- so I won't need to take it next year. I'd rather take technical writing! It will be interesting to see what you think of the website without actually having read any of the books pertaining to the philosophy. Not that it's required, but most people have. I hope you enjoy the books (providing you find them) and the forum. Zak
  25. Hey- welcome to the forum. Don't worry about the age thing. People generally don't care as long as you are polite. I'm sixteen (I joined when I was fifteen) but no one seems to care. It's really cool. To us, a good idea is just that: a good idea. Have you read any of Miss Rand's books? If so, which ones? (If not, you should go get a copy of The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged right now.) Also, you aren't coming from an entirely different world. We have members from all over the globe, some from Europe also. Is English your first language? You speak it quite well. Welcome and I look forward to your posts. Zak
