What a downer your post was!
This movie wasn't about sacrifice, it was about good guys vs. bad guys, and fighting till death. That it was executed so skillfully and that it even touches on some of the bigger ideas is probably what explains the excitement Objectivists -- or anyone -- have toward it.

CptnChan got a reaction from JASKN in What do you do if you lack talent?
I hear people talk about athletes and geniuses having "raw talent" that they are born with. But most often, I hear those same athletes and geniuses talking about all their hard work or training. Who knows better, the athletes and geniuses or the people talking about them?

On a side note, sure you hear stories of 2 year old kids knowing how to play the piano, or people who have photographic memory. Prove me wrong, but I don't think the majority of producers or "talented" people were in that category.

How Not To Argue Against Environmentalists:
Pro-tip: Don’t attempt to dismiss concerns of environmentalists by claiming that the earth has been around for 6000 years, and that’s a long time, so surely this mine won’t cause any problems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtzJhTfQiMA.

It is your money in this moment, but that's in the context of the agreement, which was to pay back the money, presumably plus interest. Entering the agreement means that the thousands of dollars do not belong to you anymore, after the agreement is over according to its terms. It's still a value swap, just over a long period of time. The debt holder can't demand payment in full, because that isn't what you agreed to, and you can't demand to stop paying, until the terms of time have been reached.

I'm not too sure about defaults. I suppose that would play out as a mixture of existing laws plus case-by-case as a person's financial situation demands, as decided by a court.

You should totally save this for your future self. I am 24 now, and looking back at written "screenshots" of what I was doing in high school is always awesome. The core mentality is still there, but some things still change.

I'm unfamiliar with this label, but I know of one case I've come across before of a group that regards having children as always immoral and aims to have people just quit breeding. The call themselves the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement. I'm pretty sure I recall them being environmentalists rather than nihilists though.

SOPA should be opposed because its mandated takedown of websites based on accusation is a denial of due process, because its interference with the internet's Domain Name System is damaging to the operation and security of the entire internet, and because it is a corrupt neo-fascist subsidy of a declining business sector whose most persuasive "argument" is the bribes it gives to congressmen's reelection committees.

Those are two great features, though. Rand quotes make nice facebook status updates, as well as the "like" feature.

CptnChan got a reaction from 2046 in What percentage of Objectivists stay Objectivist?
I'm pretty sure he was supposed to be making contradictory statements taken from different philosophies. That's the joke. It's not primarily representing objectivism. It's supposed to illustrate the average college student who stereotypically absorbs every ideaology he is introduced to.

I think the correct answer is that you should prefer to work in a quarry.

You might as well have framed the question this way... If you invite a guest to your home and he becomes rude and obnoxious do you get to shoot him?

You see it isn't the location, or even the fact that you own the house, plane, boat or whatever it is the action.

Being bothered is not a threat to your life and limb and therefore you do not have any right under any circumstances to violate the real, actual right to life of anyone for being rude and or bothersome.

CptnChan got a reaction from Plasmatic in Collapse
That was somewhat encouraging, but it doesn't really apply to what the guy in Collapse is saying. He doesn't say that the only answer to the impending abscence is to place restrictions on liberty. He says there is no answer.

I would really like to hear from someone who has seen this documentary. Even the trailer is somewhat misleading, you need to watch the actual thing. I am fully aware of the philosophical and economical reasons for suporting our petroleum based societies. I'm not asking "should oil be banned?" or something like that.

I just wondering if anyone has actually listened to what this guy is saying and what they think about it.

And Element, you mentioned finding alternatives or living in science fiction, but that's the whole point of the movie. The guy is saying neither is possible without pretty much losing most of the population on Earth.

Our population has increased to the point it is at because of oil. When that is not as readily available, population will necessarily drop. At least that's what he propounds.

If you haven't yet heard of Minecraft in a some magazine or homepage article, you likely will soon. The game is currently in beta but already has one million "subcribers".
I'll provide a link at the end.

The game has no objectives (yet). You simply start out in a randomly generated world with nothing but your own hands. You then may start gathering resources (wood, dirt, rocks, coal) and building a shelter for the first night, when monsters will spawn.

After continuing to gather resources you can created tools, such as shovels, axes, and pickaxes to increase your efficiency. The world is full of underground cave systems to explore, and the deeper you go, the more valuable resources you'll find, as well as many dangerous monsters.

Eventually, you'll have plenty of gold, steel, and other natural resources to craft whatever it is your mind can think up. Simply Youtube minecraft structures to see some of the amazing original designs and historical re-creations people have made.

One reason this game is so great IMO, is the fact that you are rewarded for advancing technologically. You can survive with just your hands, but when you craft tools you can be so much more efficient. The game doesn't punish you for crafting the Earth to create a house. In fact, scultping the Earth to your desire is basically the point of the game.

It's nice to play a game that doesn't throw in some environmental messaging somewhere, and that spawns pure creative genius. It seems like a game Howard Roark would approve of. If he played video games. Which he would by the way, because they are awesome.

Expect to hear more about this game.

This trailer is great. Especially because the guys building has a $ on it, which reminded me of Galt's Gulch.
