Fitna is more of a reminder than anything else. It puts together clips that many people have already seen on TV News, a few earlier documentaries, and places like Memri. Nevertheless, it's good to have a reminder like that now and then. I think that showing them all together in 15 minutes has the message: how can you (viewer) ignore and evade this threat?

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said Thursday night that the Department of Justice will investigate whether Wilders has broken Dutch law with his attack on the Quran.
I don't see how they can accuse him of hate-speech when the film hardly contains much commentary, just a presentation of verses from the Quran and a presentation of clips that probably appeared on Dutch TV anyway.

The film has been removed from live leak. It has been replaced with a statement from the company. The statement in and of itself is a chilling testament to the 'peaceful' nature of modern Islam.

It's on YouTube for now (another version).

In the end, all this publicity is probably getting far more people seeing this film than otherwise would. personally, I doubt I;d have viewed it, if not for the protests.

sNerd, that's the way speech crime works... It's not that the things you say are untrue, but the way in which you present the truth, or in this case the way you link the words and criminal deeds of one segment of the population back to that segment of the population. <_<

Really. It's just that Muslims are seeing a reflection of themselves in the mirror and they can't face the image.

Btw, I believe "hate speech" is an anti-concept, meant to obliterate legitimate hatred for a huge disvalue.

I should have put it in quotes. I never thought of that angle -- how it groups legitimate and illegitimate hate together. Great identification.

It's really just a lot of what was in Obsession.

In some ways it's better than Obsession. Obsession suggests that Islam has been "hijacked" and the final message in the film is that Muslims need to drive out the extremists. Fitna shows that violence is inherint in Islam (fundamental in the Quran) and it is really the moderates that are inconsistent.

Supposedly Bin Laden has spoken out against Fitna...Well, were you expecting an intellectual counerpoint?

I really don't know how to post JPEGs here, so.

I could barely make out the words under Bin Laden's message; so here they are:

If there is no check on the freedom of your words

the let your hearts be open to the freedom of our actions

And you know, in the context of this thread and that movie, those are the most evil words I have ever heard someone say.

In essence: If you want freedom of speech, then expect us to retaliate with force.

Thank you for hosting it.

I am on dialup [and before you ask, broadband is not available here, and even if it were, I rarely feel the need for it, this is one of the exceptions] and it has so far taken over an hour to load. Looks like three hours total. It appears I will not be able to save the video to my own machine once it has finished--meaning if I want to watch it again, I must wait another three hours for the same data to cross the same phone line.

Would it be possible, since this is apparently freely distributed anyway (i.e., public domain), to host it in a format where the viewer can save it to his own hard drive? Or am I mistaken in my premise?

Thank you.

I'm finally to the point in the OO hosted version where the credits are running.

I was most stunned, believe it or not, not by the rerun of images of 9-11 (frankly too many Americans *need* to see those images again), but of the part that explicitly focused on the Netherlands.

I visited the Netherlands, back in 1992; the Netherlands seemed in many ways to embody the best in European culture; the Dutch were polite and tolerant, and reasonable folk. I was unfortunately often with people who could only be described as the stereotypical "Ugly Americans" and the Dutch showed more restraint with them than I would have, in their shoes. (There was also a good deal of socialism, alas.) This is all disappearing before our eyes. A very pleasant and on the whole good country is committing suicide before our eyes.

Does anyone know what version of the Quran the quotes in the movie are from? I was trying to highlight a few of the passages in my copy, but I'm having trouble finding some of them and mine is a lot different. For example, where Fitna says "when you encounter a disbeliver cut their throats with a sword and spill their blood" mine says "when ye encounter the infidels, strike off their heads till ye have made a great slaughter among them."

Wait a second!!! :o This is the word of the almighty! It is inviolate, unchanging, immortal!!!!!!!! There is only one version! It is the word of God it can not be interpreted!!!

I think I'll go puke now. ;)

I don't know that I would say that Fitna is in the public domain. Originally, Geert Wilders wanted his own website, which would have gotten 5 million hits by now, and maybe he could have made some money from this film. As it is, he was denied a website and no option to get his message out aside from free distribution via other websites. He also has a death fatwa hanging over his head. So what I propose, is that if there is a Geert Wilders defense fund, that a link be made on the websites displaying Fitna, so that people can donate to the cause of keeping him safe.

Anyone know if there is such a defense fund? Or what he is doing now with that death fatwa hanging over his head?
