Erik Lazar
I made this piece a few years ago, before I had ever discovered Objectivism or Ayn Rand. Although the black and white tone and some of the imagery suggests a dark or malign scene, I was actually inspired to do this at the time by a sense of joie de vrie and an epiphany of free will. The symbols I chose because of my love of classical mythology and as a congruent symbol of that feeling that had struck me in my musing: That we are free and that that freedom is life and the only thing that holds us back from that can be ourselves. Often in mythology there is the symbol of the hero wrestling with the dragon, who represents adversity, whether from without or within. In almost all these stories the hero struggles and wins, slaying the dragon, and I think that is an inspiring story. We all have dragons to wrestle with in our time, but in the end they cannot defeat us so long as we do not defeat ourselves. It's old, and looking on it I still find flaws here and there or things I would have done differently now, but it doesn't upset me, because it only makes me realize I have improved.
