I have recently been added to the ownership of the Yahoo! OPAR list. The currently listed owners are David Croft, Dean Cook, and myself, Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.

I want to congratulate Dean Cook for keeping the group going for so long, and I hope to keep it going for an indefinite period of time. I will try to schedule regular meetings, perhaps once a month or more frequently, and will promote the group list on other forums to try to increase membership.

I still need to find a meeting place for the next meeting, which will be The Voice of Reason 06/15/2008 3pm. We will go over in some detail the first and third essay in that collection of essays. The second essays is primarily a book review, though it does have things to say about Aristotle by Ayn Rand, so I would suggest reading it.

I'm hoping that as we add to the membership, we can have email discussions of things related to Objectivism, a subject I never grow tired of understanding and discussing.

For those of you who may not know me personally, I have been studying Objectivism for thirty years and have been a member of many discussion groups and meeting groups centered around Objectivism as those have arisen in the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex area for the twenty years that I have lived here. I also have been an active member of several nationwide study groups as these have become available for the past twenty to twenty-five years via the Internet.

The topics of discussion are available to anyone with a Yahoo! account, simply make a request to join and you will get the emails associated with the list.

If you have any questions, you can either reply to this post or send me a personal email:

We will cover the first and third essays in The Voice of Reason collection. I will create some questions covering those essays and will post them to the Yahoo OPAR list as soon as I can. You will have to have at least a Yahoo account to have access to the question and the discussion, or sign up with this OPAR group and the email will be sent to you.

I've scouted out a meeting place for June 22, 3pm. There is a Starbucks on the south west corner of Midway and Spring Valley in the Park Central North shopping center. I went there today, Sunday, and they were not crowded at about 4pm, so I think it will be good. And, as a bonus for some of us, smoking is permitted outside. Their hours are 7am-6pm Sundays, and I plan on being there before 3pm. You can look for me and my copy of The Voice of Reason. There is a picture of me on my website, though I have a beard and moustache now. I don't have a cell phone, so please use the information below to find us. The Starbucks is a few blocks (maybe a mile) north of 635 and Midway just before Spring Valley.

Address and phone number:

Starbucks

13901 Midway Road, Suite 110

Farmers Branch TX 75234

The June meeting went well, even though only myself and David Croft showed up. We have an interesting and lively discussion regarding the first and third essays in The Voice of Reason. The next meeting will probably be one month from now, and I hope more members show up since it makes for a better discussion. For those of you who are familiar with the DFW OPAR Study Group, and didn't show up, you can still participate by joining the email list and we can discuss them via email.

I look forward to continued endeavors of the DFW OPAR Study Group.

The next DFW OPAR Study Group meeting will take place on Sunday, July 27, 2008, 3pm at the Starbucks on Midway, Farmers Branch, 13901 Midway Road, suite 110, Farmers Branch TX 75234 (same place as last month). We will discuss the next two essays of The Voice of Reason, "Who is the Final Authority in Ethics?" and "The Psychology of Psychologizing". It may be necessary to split this into two meetings, since I think these essays are a bit more difficult to grasp, but I will try to post the questions for each essays soon.

If you have any questions, please contact me:

[email protected]

Thank you!

I will try to have the meetings on the forth Sunday of every month, just to keep the meeting times consistent month to month.

I will post the questions to the regular OPAR email list, which can be accessed via the web if one has a Yahoo! account. I haven't decided yet to make all of this available via a blog of some sort.

In my opinion, this is one of the most difficult of all of Miss Rand's stand-alone essays. I have come up with 27 questions, which means that discussions on this topic may have to be a two-parter.

I've made a few changes to the OPAR Yahoo! group, such as not displaying the Yahoo! Answers, as those answers did not come from us and some enemies of Objectivism were responding to the questions; my only option was not to endorse that section of Yahoo! by not displaying it on our home page. Also, evidently it is possible to subscribe to the OPAR group email without signing up for the group by using the form in my signature. I don't have any control over who subscribes and who doesn't as I have no control of that Yahoo! list. I guess you can try it for a while and then decide to join the group if you want to. I have control over who can join the group, but not the subscriptions.

Sorry for the late notice, but the next DFW OPAR meeting is this Sunday, August 23rd.

The next meeting will take place at the Carrollton Starbucks. We will discuss "The Psychology of Psychologizing" the questions of which have been previously posted and are available via the web. David Croft wants to discuss the next essay in The Voice of Reason "Altruism as Appeasement" and he will come up with the questions for that essay.

The next OPAR Study Group meeting will take place at the Carrollton Starbucks at 3pm. We will cover "The Question of Scholarships" and "Of Living Death" in The Voice of Reason. I will try to get the questions done by next weekend. If you have any questions, please get in touch with me.

Of special interest given this year's elections is the next essay, "Religion versus America" by Dr. Peikoff, which we will get to next month, unless there is a lot of interest to discuss this essay.

Thanks!

I need to cancel the meeting of the 28th.

I forgot that I have out-of-town visitors the weekend of the 28, so I think I need to cancel that meeting, as it is the first whole day I will be able to spend with them.

Sorry about that.

This is a bit ironic, given the essay we were going to study, but due to one of the primary attendees not being able to make it to the meeting at that time, this meeting is canceled. I would love to have more people showing up at the meetings, but that isn't happening.

If you are interested in discussing that essay or the others we have discussed, you are welcome to sign up to our email list.

Have a happy -- and intellectually inspiring -- holiday season

The next meeting will take place at the Carrollton Starbucks at 3pm on April 26, 2009. The meeting will be on Ayn Rand's essays, "How to Read (and not to Write)" in The Voice of Reason. I will have the question prepared by this week before the meeting. While short, I think this is an important essay.

You can participate via email if you join the group.

I think this essay is similar to her essay on philosophic detection.

The next meeting will be on "The Lessons of Vietnam" by Ayn Rand in The Voice of Reason. The meeting place will be the usual Carrollton Starbucks at 3pm. You can also participate via email to the group list, if you like.

I'm not sure when I can get the questions done, as my work schedule for this week is uncertain.
