Our own Eric Daniels has contributed (writing chapter one and some parts of chapter three) to a new study published by PRI and Forbes magazine. From the press release:

San Francisco – The Pacific Research Institute (PRI), a free-market think tank based in California, today released the U.S. Economic Freedom Index: 2008 Report, a ranking of economic freedom in the 50 states. Published in association with Forbes, the Index scores states based on 143 variables, including regulatory and fiscal obstacles imposed on businesses and residents.

The study is in PDF form at the bottom of the article. Guess who's #1?

I was going to guess that maybe Colorado was among the most free states, but I guess that's a bit naive. I figured that it couldn't be a coastal state, but South Dakota is #1 in freedom? Dang. Yeah, no kidding about who's the _least_ free. That stat. likely won't change anytime soon either. :-/ ...although my state seems to be fighting for that position. (sigh)

Colorado is #3 on the list; it's definitely among the most free states.
