softwareNerd
If the people I work with are any indication, McCain's making a wise decision: he's lost Michigan. Edited October 3, 2008 by softwareNerd
KendallJ
He's lost most states I'd bet. He'd win Midland tho.
IchorFigure
Michigan is very leftist. Even though unions have hallowed it out in the past decades, they don't care and won't for the foreseeable future. It went to Kerry in 04 and it'll go to Obama in '08. softwareNerd
The US Political Atlas web-site classifies states as "toss-ups" or leaning toward one party or the other. There are 3 categories of "leaning": slight (2-5%), lean (5%-10%), strong (>10%). In recent elections, Michigan leans Democrat, but not strongly so. The last time Michigan voted Republican was 1988 (Bush Sr. vs. Dukakis), but it also voted for Reagan both times before that. In a nutshell, the swing voter in Michigan looks very much like a "Reagan Democrat" and will be open to a similar approach; but, will stick with Democrats if he does not hear that message. gags
Just from a purely tactical perspective, one has to wonder what kind of idiots McCain has running his campaign. Why on earth would you announce that you're conceding MI? It's one thing to pull ads and devote resources to other states where your chances are better, but why tell everyone that's what your're doing? It makes no sense, but a lot of what McCain does makes no sense. As far as local conditions in this socialist rust-bucket are concerned, our Canadian governor has done a good job of making the state less friendly for business by raising taxes and refusing to cut the size of government. Although you can't blame all of the state's economic problems on Granholm, she and the union thugs that elect her haven't done a damn thing to make MI a place where any sane businessman would want to locate. While the rest of the country is headed into a recession, we've been in a one state depression since about 2001. Oh, I forgot. She did come up with a film industry subsidy that is a 40% direct cash payment for any producers who come here and make movies. The idea is that if you're Michael Moore or Steve Spielberg and you come to MI and spend $100 making a movie, the state writes you a check for $40. So basically we tax the unemployed auto workers in Sterling Heights and Warren so that we can pay a bunch of Hollywierd leftists to come here for a few weeks and make a movie. Never mind the guy with a small business who lives here and actually employs people in long-term jobs, he can't get a tax break from the state. Thank you Governor Granholm, now those are chains we can live in!
Steve D'Ippolito
Ya boo, Michigan isn't that great. Whattatheygot? A bunch of stinking lakes. That's nothin'! *squirms off* Yeah, they're crazy down there. Any good Coloradoan knows you don't just leave water lying around on the ground like that. Weyoun42
Well, Kalamazoo is a double-college town (Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University) and it's Obama signs as far as the eye can see. What little goodwill McCain had scraped out of me--that part of the convention speech about freeing education--has been more or less flushed with this bailout fiasco. I had even put out a McCain sign in my yard just to be difficult since there are ZERO that I've seen in my neighborhood, but yesterday I threw it in the garage in disgust. It's nice to see that McCain agreed with me on that and was essentially doing the same thing for the rest of the state. Let's see what a solid two years of unapologetic progressive socialist control in Washington does for people's opinions. Jimmy Carter II is on the horizon.
