She is definitely a religionist, but some of her stuff is fairly funny. This latest collumn made me chuckle. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=...mp;pageId=82110

It's funny and hard hitting. This shows you what happens when we release Guantanamo detainees. They return to terrorism and murder innocent people, after getting an artificial leg courtesy of the American government. Thank you leftists, you really are defenders of justice.

excerpt:

[...]

Upon his release in March 2004, Massoud hippity-hopped back to Afghanistan and quickly resumed his war against the U.S. Aided by his new artificial leg, just months later, in October 2004, Massoud masterminded the kidnapping of two Chinese engineers in Pakistan working on the Gomal Zam Dam project.

This proved, to me at least, that people with disabilities can do anything they put their minds to. Way to go, you plucky extremist!

Massoud said he had nothing against the Chinese but wanted to embarrass Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for cooperating with the Americans. You know, the Americans who had just footed – you should pardon the expression – a $75,000 bill for his prosthetic leg.

Pakistani forces stormed Massoud's hideout, killing all the kidnappers, including Massoud. Only one of the Chinese engineers was rescued alive.

As a result of the kidnapping, the Chinese pulled all 100 engineers and dam workers out of Pakistan, and work on the dam ceased. This was bad news for the people of Pakistan – but good news for the endangered Pakistani snail darter!

In none of the news accounts I read of Massoud's return to jihad after his release from Guantanamo is there any mention of the fact that his prosthetic leg was acquired in Guantanamo, courtesy of American taxpayers after he was captured trying to kill Americans on the battlefield in Afghanistan.

Isn't anybody dismayed by the fact that Coulter is so intensely anti-intellectual, in all her rhetorical tricks as well as in every book she produces? How can an Objectivist be enamored of someone who is nothing more than a pure attack-dog who cares nothing about what is true or good, only that her "team" wins? I'd be really, really disappointed to think that all it takes for someone to be admired around here is to say some things people like to hear, regardless of how they are said, whether the arguments are rational, and whether they've shown any evidence of being virtuous.

Personally I think Ann Coulter is vile and find it darkly ironic that she was literally forced to shut up. I can respect the views of those who have mentioned (correctly) that her injury has nothing to do with her ideas or with the discourse in general and that perhaps it is not the best thing to be excited or make fun of someone getting hurt. What really bothers me is to see folks actually having anything good to say about her.

I am not a christian, but the continued dominance of religion in general and christianity in america exist because the opposition(outside objectivism) on the left are so irrational, that I can hardly blame anybody for sticking with Jesus as their moral ideal. Bush=Hitler is not a convincing argument, nor is protesting in the street, or in this case celebrating the injury of someone who's values may be in error, but who still at least has values. The only arguement I could have against christians, would be that they evade better arguements that are available, but the more I see this kind of thing, the less I can blame them, and its sad.

Can't you do better than this?

I'm not sure that I agree with your assessment of her. Do you not think she would respect a solid argument against her position?

I value Coulter where she rightly skewers left wing dogma. She's very good at it and she hits the mark a lot. Leftists deserve this. Her positions here are often anchored in logic. Her problem, as I've said, is that she is a religionist and seems to believe America was founded on Christianity. This is a major problem, of course, and I have no truck with her on that front.

What makes you say that?
How can an Objectivist be enamored of someone who is nothing more than a pure attack-dog who cares nothing about what is true or good, only that her "team" wins?
That sounds more like a caricature than an actual description of her. What is 'true' and 'good' to her is conservative Christian values. You may not agree with those values, and you may view them as neither true nor good, but that does not mean that she does not view them that way. She opposes the left because she sees them as holding values opposite of her own. To her credit, she does nothing to appease her foes. She goes right at the heart of what they believe and regularly skewers them with her sharp tongue. Like here:

Far from being sodomized and tortured by U.S. forces – as Obama's base has wailed for the past seven years – the innocent scholars and philanthropists being held at Guantanamo have been given expensive, high-tech medical procedures at taxpayer expense. If we're not careful, multitudes of Muslims will be going to fight Americans in Afghanistan just so they can go to Guantanamo and get proper treatment for attention deficit disorder and erectile dysfunction.

She is entertaining if nothing else, and has more balls than any ten conservative politicians you can name.

I think what you see from her and most of the intellectuals from the right reflects an intrinsicist theory of knowledge... they always come across like their own view are just so "obvious". That is what they share with religionists, even when they aren't themselves that religious.

So, if you're anti-Liberal, anti-progressive, anti-multicultural, anti-political-correctness, you are in agreement with Ann Coulter, and therefore, an idiot.

Thanks for the lesson.

Who said anything about being an idiot?

This thread started out with an unprovoked attack on a forum member by another member who has a long and consistent history of this bullshit.

Moderators? [crickets chirping]

Well, it's sort of poke back from the kind of poking being done here. A poke isn't a slap or a punch.

Nothing I do is ever unprovoked.

Interesting that some don't like to be teased and try to get others banned for it, then they turn around and, appear to, playfully tease others and not expect the same treatment. I think if we want mature adults on this website, as David properly suggests, we get rid of the children.

One thing I like about this forum is how much I learn about my own thought process. I'll admit that I was(initially) pleased to hear about this injury, but this thread made me think about what exactly I was happy about: Another human being suffering an accidental injury...

Yeah. Well, let's just say I've re-thought that position.

Also, I've learned that this board really needs a good exterminator. Those damn crickets are everywhere!
