Kitty Hawk
Here is an early glimpse of the more moderate protestors of the Republican National Convention: Bicycle Protest Earlier in the day, hundreds of moms with small children, plus some dads, pushed strollers across the Brooklyn Bridge in another protest against President Bush. ''Bush is taking away our children's future. Money for pre-emptive war takes away money from child care,'' said Malissa Smith as she joined the demonstration by Mothers Opposing Bush. The group - called MOB- was led by a pair of 4-year-olds with their ''Kids for Kerry'' banner. The real kooks of the left will make MOB look rational. oldsalt
It will be interesting to see how far the protestors go. If they aren't careful, they will bring out the Republican vote in a way the RNC could never accomplish. (This actually happened in the '68 election when then country resoundingly rejected McGovern, whose adherents turned Chicago into an armed camp.) These people are so vicious that no one with half a mind would side with them. While there are those boomers who are nostalgic for the good ol' days of the 60's and 70's, there are many more of us who never participated, and who actually remember that this kind of thing lead to near anarchy, with its attendent death and destruction. We are already under threat of burning cities from the Islamists. One would hope that no one wants to see it coming from our own citizens once again. I sometimes wonder just what these same people will do if they lose. They are already setting things up, with their "monitors" and their lawyers, to dispute the election. The graceless Gore set a lousy precedent.
Charles T.
The group - called MOB- was led by a pair of 4-year-olds with their ''Kids for Kerry'' banner. Did you get that, RadCap? Lots of material there for you. I saw a funny segment on The Daily Show recently, where one of the "reporters" went to the DNC and assembled a group to interview. He found a lesbian (question: why is it always referred to as the "gay and lesbian" community? Are lesbians not GAY women?), a Jew, a "gay-guy", a "black-guy", an environmentalist, an abortion-rights woman, an Arab-Latino youth (who was referred to as "Arab-tino" ), an Indian woman (Native American), another Indian woman (Indian-American), and many other individuals representing various "interest-groups", sat them all down and proceeded to allow them to look like the fools they are. By the end of the segment, they were all bickering with each other, and it was a perfect illustration of what the Democratic "party", or "the Left", has become: a motley collection of unrelated, unprincipled loose ends, each looking for their own "special" hand-out from the government. I was pleasantly suprised to see a segment that so clearly revealed the Left for who they are, on a program that tends to lean in that direction. Then, John Kerry was on the program a few days ago, and if that didn't serve to lower his poll-ratings two or three points, I don't know what could. The man has less charm than Al Gore. The graceless Gore set a lousy precedent. Your point is well taken regarding the protesters and their ability to cause their "cause" to backfire upon them. In 1968, the hippies protested in Chicago against the Democrats during their convention, and Humphrey lost the election to Nixon. My opinion is that the Chicago protesters in 1968 were the ones who set this ugly precedent. Today's protesters are obviously sympathetic to the Democrats' agenda, which includes a strong does of caretaker government. The rest of us will look at these protests and violence with great disdain, and many of us will vote for the Republicans and Bush partly as a reaction to this.
