Putin warns US against socialism

http://patdollard.com/2009/02/putin-warns-...inst-socialism/

“Nor should we turn a blind eye to the fact that the spirit of free enterprise, including the principle of personal responsibility of businesspeople, investors, and shareholders for their decisions, is being eroded in the last few months. There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state.”

This is the most unbelievable news I've ever heard. It's as shocking as if the Pope suddenly declared he was an atheist.

Putin is one sly mother. I have absolutely no idea what he's up to with this one.

I don't know...I think his is a pretty fair assessment of how far we have come. He might just be telling the truth.

This is actually quite interesting. It seems to show one of two things happening here. Either

1) Russia is moving towards Capitalism (it's hard to believe that is happening)

or, much more likely

2) The realization that NO Socialist State wants to completely throttle individualism and Capitalism. This could be a situation where a second-hander realizes what he is, is subtly broadcasting it to the world, and understands that he NEEDS us to be a nation built on individual rights for his nation to survive.

This ought to be a HUGE sign for Americans and for our leaders, but it will probably just be ignored.

I suppose it could be a few other things too, like he had too much to drink the night before but that's all I got at this point.

I think that this sort of captures it, but doesn't. I'm thinking here of a economic form of fascism, where one nominally claim that individuals and free enterprises exist and in reality exerts significant arbitrary control in the background. I think Putin has figured this out, and this sort of idea is much more dangerous than socialism.

John Allison in his recent DC talk argued this sort of idea.

http://blog.aynrandcenter.org/obamanomics-...e-failed-ideas/

At one point Allison made the comment that he believes the United States government moving in the direction of economic Fascism as opposed to Socialism. Meaning that bureaucrats have realized that they don’t need to own the means of production in order to control them.

It means that you and I who own the means of production will have to assert exactly what ownership means in order to stand up to these guys.

Please. Obama is being so nice and so careful to not mention their human rights abuses (like the journalist who was killed just last week), that the Russians are running out of excuses to attack the bad Americans.

The best Putin could come up with is this, for now. I wonder what Medvedev will say next, trying to trump him.

One of Putin's economic advisors was a fan of Ayn Rand and free markets. I don't recall who, and I doubt he had much influence, but this guy was talked about quite a bit a few years back. Given this, and the fact that Ayn Rand was Russian (Russian pride, you know), I'm sure Putin knows about her work.

LOL, of course he warned about socialism! Socialism would interfere with his continued demagoguery.

Russia/Russians on the whole don't give a flying f*ck what the system is, just so long as there's one guy, tougher than the rest, or nastier than the rest in charge. They love :( their strongmen.

I kind of miss the Soviet Union. They kept the Islamic nut jobs in check, and we knew who the bad guy was. And they made a kick-ass assault rifle.

I miss the Soviet Union in the same way that M from Casino Royale did. I think her quote was something like, "In the old days, if an agent did something that stupid, he'd have the good sense to defect. Christ, I miss the Cold War."

Putin does look like a Bond villian. :P

I've always thought this. If Arnold Schwarzenegger can take time of from being Governor of California to act in Terminator 3, why can't Putin take time off to act in the next Bond film?

And just like Schwarzenegger, he wouldn't have to act the part. The Russian accent comes complete with the action figure.

This is the product of bitter experience. This skepticism is not quite the same thing as a philosophical conviction, but they ought to be related in the mind of any rational person. Alas, confidence in rationality is still lacking.

I think you have to be completely retarded to have lived under communism and not understand that socialism is a bad idea. Putin is a nationalist/fascist and an amoral tyrant, but he's not a socialist. He is very much evil, so it's best we ignore him and his "advice".

That's the problem with ad hominem approaches. His advice is to not be socialists. It's good advice regardless of whatever kind of evil he might be.

In my opinion anyone who misses the Soviet Union has never seen the iron curtain.

I still find it hard to fathom an ideology that turned nations into prisons, and I've seen it.

We were being factitious.

I know, I was replying more to the Putin quote than anything. There are some (I'm not saying here) that do think that way, they believe the devil they knew is better than the unknown ones we face today. <_<

That's just stupid its the military equivalent of having, as Rand put it, "thought enough".

It's amusing that 33 percent of Lithuanians still miss Soviet Union...

Hehe, I called it:

"RUSSIA BRUSHES OFF OBAMA: NO 'HAGGLING' " - headline on Drudge

Boy do I know my Russians.

Oddly enough, just like Putin, he's right (we need to not haggle our principles away). Of course it's mostly an odds game: criticism of Obama is bound to be at leastt partially right.
