Seanjos
With medicine socialised, obesity is a national concern. The government is pushing sports science departments hard, they want to know why everybody is getting fatter and they want us to fix it. The funding we are receiving is bordering on ridiculous. I don't think there's a damn thing 'we' can do about it and all this money ensures is more olympic success. This is happening in Japan and now with American medicine 50% socialised I see similar trends occuring there. If medicine was private, it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference, but we're not going to see private healthcare anytime soon. I have to make a report: What can be done about obesity ? I wonder if we should be doing anything, if you want to be fat, be fat. Although when it's healthy people footing the bill, in a place where everyone loves National Health Service I can't help think that something must be done. Jake_Ellison
The reason why people are getting fat is because life is good. End of story. Unless it's deregulating the healthcare system, there's nothing that should be done about it. What you could put in your report is a list of measures that proved ineffective, and the ways in which each of those measures violated individual rights. Then, you can maybe argue that dictating to people what their eating habits should be doesn't work, because human beings have a tendency to subconsciously resist authority, and will in fact end up eating more when ordered to eat less or healthy.(slaves tend to do a bad job even at menial tasks such as : dig a hole or choose a healthy diet) The way I see it, if the goal is to reduce obesity no matter what (which the assignment implies, by mandating that you come up with ways to reduce obesity, rather than decide if we should reduce it), there are two ways: 1. The first one is a big maybe, it probably won't actually reduce obesity right now, but it will slow down its growth, and eventully stop it: drop all government medical assistance and let people deal with the consequences of their eating habits. Free, independent people make far better decisions. 2.This one is guaranteed to work: physically prevent people from eating- that means fat concentration camps, jails for fat people etc. If the means doesn't matter (as your assignment implies), then this is the obvious, and by all accounts the only, way to achieve the goal. W.C.Meyer
Maybe this has already been said, but, perhaps eating right and excercising? (and don't tell me it's not that simple)
Ralph
Charge people based on their fitness level. If they don't want to be healthy, they have to pay extra because they cost extra.
