But in some ways Marxism seems more akin to Western capitalism than to radical Environmentalism. As Robert Tucker observed in Philosophy and Myth in Karl Marx, mainstream Marxism is a utopian religion, but it is also materialistic and "scientific." It assumes that humankind, as a successful animal species within nature, is entitled to subdue and exploit nature and to use technology to alter nature for our benefit.

Sometimes I cannot help but feel nostalgia for the Communist propaganda I would hear in my childhood, as compared to the kind of propaganda we keep hearing today. Factories, vehicles, power plants, etc. were presented with pride and in entirely positive light, as glorious "achievements of our Socialist Nation," and I grew up on books celebrating the Soviet (and to a lesser extent, the American) space program. The Communists were bad enough for wanting to forbid ambition to me as an individual, but it didn't occur to them to deny ambition to mankind as such. The viros make them look like saints!

Well you can have it all: the president of the Czech Republic is quoted as saying that the Environmentaists are Marxists.

I propose making that February 3rd, so it lands on my birthday!

Um...Jill chose February 2 for a reason... :)

But I like the idea--I never really attached much significance to my birthday because I didn't see what it was supposed to celebrate. But now that I think of it, it's certainly a great time to celebrate myself!

haha yes I know, but by the same reason, everybody's birthday should be Self Day, right?

During a birthday party of a friend yesterday I realized that each year we celebrate probably the only thing about our lives that we had absolutely nothing to do with. I think instead we should celebrate the day we left our parent's house or our first self earned money or some such thing. Only I don't remember when that was.

I celebrate the day I registered the domain name for my software company, September 28, every year. It is sort of symbolic of when my professional career began.

It is true that your birth is something you had absolutely nothing to do with, but as the beginning of your existence, I think it's definitely an event to commemorate joyfully!

I think a wedding anniversary is a great day to celebrate yourself (as well as your spouse.) A successful marriage is not possible without a successful me. :)
