Capitalism: A Love Story by Michael Moore

Yeh, same here in South Africa. Many people I know (who haven't yet formed strong intellectual opinions) will eat Moore's shit up. It's not necessarily about preaching to the choir, but preaching to those who don't know any better. That's where it hurts the most.

I suspect that it isn't so much anti-Capitalism that draws Europeans, etc. to Moore's movies. I also suspect that it isn't anti-Americanism, per se, if you define "anti-Americanism" as "opposed to the fundamental values of America." I think that it's--for lack of a better term--penis envy. Much of the sentiment against America in the rest of the world is jealousy of our power to, essentially, do what we want without having to ask permission. They want to have our power and influence, so they oppose us as a way of narrowing the gap between us and them, knowing that they'd behave in much the same way as us, if our positions were reversed. It's just good, old-fashioned ingroup/outgroup human rivalry.

No one has any comments on this? I actually thought I made a pretty good point, but it seems to have killed the thread for over a month.

That's true. I have observed this in people that come from my own country: they hate America because of how powerful it is. In reality, they hate themselves because they know the country they are from is home to people whose ethics wouldn't let them achieve a third of what America has achieved in its history, and so they hate it for that particular reason.

That's why I'm more American at heart than anything else.

(Just tell the INS *that*, geez)

Just saw the preview. Sick. I can't believe it is legitimized by even being on a site like rottentomatoes.com. I guess if you have a large enough marketing budget you can advertise anything, anywhere.

His entire method is dishonest. Catch people off guard to get footage of them "looking" dishonest. Present only one set of facts with the purpose of implying a false "truth." Even using that song in the preview with gunshots, and having parts of "Capitalism" appear with the shots, distorts the truth. The whole movie looks like it's going to be a mess of confusing economic buying power with political physical power.

I... hate him.

He seemed to be under the impression that people who use the government as an instrument of plunder to steal from other people are somehow "Capitalists."

Indeed. I like how he showed up in front of the AIG building asking for the bailout money back... Now, who was responsible for giving them tax payer money? I dont recall AIG forcing us to hand it over...

It seems that this is going to be his most blatant attempt at misleading the feeble minded cretins further into the realm of ignorance and mental slavery.

You know, sometimes I wish the Cold War had turned into a real war and the entire world was torn apart by nuclear bombs, killing billions of people. That way the few people remaining would so despise Communism with every fiber of their body that, hopefully, just hopefully, there would never have been any more Communism ever again. That way Michael Moore would not exist; people would have assassinated him.

But that's a dream world...

Yeah that kind of was an odd statement. Communism has killed hundreds of millions of people as it stands already, and enslaved over a billion. Most of the world lives under either Communist states or Socialist juntas. There's no need to wish death upon billions more people, there wouldn't be any point to that.

Michael Moore had this to say in a Reuter's story about his new BS filled "documentary". This is what he said about the cure for Capitalism," "You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy."

Ayn Rand and the Founding Fathers were dead on in condemning democracy. Unf. the majority of the American body politic is ignorant of the massive difference between a limited Constitutional Republic (which is what the USA is supposed to be) and a democracy. But very sadly and pathetically, public schools will continue to teach this errorneous idea to the young minds that will become the American citizenry.

That's a terrible, anti-life world.

I want no part in that, but thanks.

I just found out that I'm being dragged along to watch it for school.

That is fucking atrocious! Your parents should write the board of education, or you should poiinting out how your country is founded on the principals inherent in capitalism.

I'm going to take notes and argue against it. Should be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Kick their asses Nick.

What?? This makes me very curious! Could you give more details? What class is this for? What grade level? What kind of school? I find this disturbing.

I go to a school that is in its first year of operation, and was supposed to be like a charter school, so I can work at a faster pace. It turns out that it isn't nearly as intellectual as any of us had planned, quite the contrary. In any case, I'm in grade 11, although all people from all grades are grouped together. I am the one of the only other two intelligent people there. It's not really for any class in specific, it's just to make us think, supposedly. I've known the owner for a few years, and am pretty good friends with her, but she's a big fan of Noam Chomsky.
