L-C
Could it be that female hero-worship is responsible for the fact that it's pretty much always (teenage) girls who scream, cry or even faint at the sight of their idol/popstar/whatever? I mean at concerts and such. Not that every girl does this but the behavior as such seems almost exclusive female. Or is there some psychological trait other than hero-worship, which Rand said was the essence of femininity, at work? Guys don't seem to be capable of nearly the same emotional exaltation no matter who they meet.
Jake_Ellison
Or is there some psychological trait other than hero-worship, which Rand said was the essence of femininity, at work? She did make the distinction between superficial infatuation and true love, I know that much. Also, I don't think most teenage girls do faint at concerts, and there are men obsessed with famous women: the ones who act on it are called stalkers. "Hero-worship is a demanding virtue: a woman has to be worthy of it and of the hero she worships. Intellectually and morally, i.e., as a human being, she has to be his equal;then the object of her worship is specifically his masculinity, not any human virtue she might lack." (Rand) I'm thinking it is not the trait of femininity which allows women to "hero-worship", to admire an equal's masculinity, that you are describing. Teenage girls' idols tend to be women, or not very masculine men.(except Elvis - he was dreamy) Edited July 26, 2009 by Jake_Ellison
L-C
It's definately not the same thing, yeah. But the difference in behavior is still there. What's the cause?
JMeganSnow
It's definately not the same thing, yeah. But the difference in behavior is still there. What's the cause? Teenage females don't have a bunch of buddies that will call them a fag and rib them endlessly for the screaming, that's what. If you ever hear high-pitched squeals coming out of a male in this culture, you'll know there's something seriously wrong.
