Brand New Objectivist Punk Band hailing from Austin Texas

Hi Everyone,

Would like to introduce myself. My name is Chad Merritt and I am the singer/songwriter/guitarist for the band '16 Hour Drive'. I stand for Objectivism and with all the liberal bands out there today it's inspired me to write a new album that sends the message. If you would like please take a look/listen to my music. It's posted here: www.purvolume.com/16hourdrive or on myspace at www.myspace.com/16hourdrive

This new record is all me. I am playing every instrument and have done all the engineering/production on it. I have placed up 2 tracks that are still a raw mix. We are also in process of filming a video for 'Power to the People'. Which should premier mid Sept, 2009 along with the release of the new album.

Thanks for your time and look forward to being a part of this forum.

Thanks,

Chad

Well done. I like it. Could you post the lyrics?

Thank You! Here's the lyrics to 'Power to the People'.

lyrics..

power to the people

power to the people

respect our authority is what they say

theres madness in the street

and everyones around

chaos, anarchy it's all going down

and whats it gonna take for all to see?

america's burning in the name of liberty!

we all knew it was coming

we all knew it would happen

we all knew eventually that it would go down

it's all been written

it's all been said

it's how our founding fathers buried their dead

they all better listen

they all better run

theres madness in the streets

and they still have their guns

fighting for a reason

fighting for a cause

spinning back around it's no use at all!!!

standing here today

we all stand tall

is this the change you promised

well it's no use at all

fists in the air

who was john galt??!!

50 years later how could she have known!?!?!

standing here today

we all stand tall

is this the change you promised

well it's no use at all

they all better listen

they all better run

theres madness in the streets

and they still have their guns

bridge:

something keeps telling me to go

something keeps telling me to run

something keeps telling me it's no where left to hide!!!

Like it, too. I hope there will be more!

Thanks!! For sure more to come. I have an entire record that is filled with Ayn's views and ideas. There are so many people on the other side that we have to get the message out there. The video we are doing should spark some controversy for sure but it needs to be said. Especially during these times.

Thanks again!

Chad

I'm not a fan of punk, but I like your music! You're very talented, and I think it's great that you're providing a rational alternative to the melancholic quagmire that's so popular right now.

Keep it up!

Like your sound, Chad. I was hoping it wouldn't be the more hardcore stuff. The music is pretty catchy. The lyrics could use a little honing in on, I think, but the message is there.

Good stuff, though. Keep it up and keep us posted on what your band does.

I don't listen to much punk, except Bad Religion. They're my favorite band by far, so as a percentage of listening time I guess I mostly listen to punk, haha. But in any case I think you have a good deal of potential. Like others have said, work on the lyrics, they seem to often sort jump (don't rhyme when you might expect sometimes) and especially there seems to be times when its scrunched up or too short, like more words/syllables than fit on the line are there. Definitely potential, and I will certainly listen to your album.

My uncle actually lives in California and does sound work (effects, etc) for a lot of celebrity singers and bands, he visited often when I was younger so he helped me get a better grasp on what is good music.

I would definitely say this is some good stuff, the lyrics could use a tiny bit of work but they are certainly acceptable and not much of a problem. I was expecting something more amateur or trashy, and this left me quite surprised. You guys are good enough to "make it" to at least some degree in my opinion. I would certainly like to hear some more of your stuff and would love to see this video you are referring to once it is finished.

This is great stuff and I have often pondered about Objectivist based media/art of the newer kind such as punk/rock etc. This is excellent. It honestly seems like Objectivism is starting to have an unprecedented, albeit a little bit slow so far, cultural uprising and this is just one of those examples.

Much credit to you guys and thanks for sharing this, this made my morning much better. I will post your myspace on my facebook status etc. and help you guys get a little bit more of an audience, even if it isn't local it helps.

While I doubt she would be much of a fan of punk rock, I think Ayn Rand would appreciate it to the same degree simply for the interesting medium and the effort and the sincerity of it all and so forth. I think she would approve wholeheartedly.

Thank you so much!! I just put up another track called 'Economic Justice' on our myspace page. It's my wife's favorite. Thanks again and I'll keep spreading the message!

Tks,

Chad

Hi Everyone,

Here's the lyrics to 'Economic Justice'

Individual Rights... It's the pursuit of my own happiness.

My existence.... It's my own identity and consciousness.

My ideas... Reproduction of reality.

Objectivism.... The pursuit of ones own happiness.

John Galt... He still exists in our society.

Consciousness... Possesses our own identity.

The nation state... Is calling for our concern.

Chorus:

Economic justice / Socialism

Just what does this all mean?

Economic Justice / Socialism

Their redistributing our wealth.

Bridge:

Dreaming of a spot in Colorado

Taggert and John are hanging down low.

There is a little outro message that should be pretty clear..

:D

Hm, when the listener listens to the music and lyrics he should feel on hearing the words "Yeah, that's what I would have written". I really didn't get that feeling from your last piece. I think you are reaching for the lyrics. The sound forced, unnatural.

I'm not a songwriter but I've written poetry (for my own pleasure) and to me all good songs would and could exist as good poems. I'm not getting that from "Economic Justice".

For example the chorus, nothing wrong with the first three lines... works fine holds a beat and is predicable rhythmically. But then you get to the last line and, well the wheels of the rhythm fall off.

Economic justice / Socialism (10 syllables)

Just what does this all mean? (6 Syllables long last syllable)

Economic Justice / Socialism (10 syllables)

Their redistributing our wealth. (8 syllables short last syllable)

Why not...

Economic justice / Who is John Galt (10 syllables)

What the hell does it all mean? (7 Syllables)

Economic Justice / Socialism (10 syllables)

Kills the American Dream. (7 syllables)

More of my 2 cents than you wanted probably, but I'm just trying to help. Still love the sound though. Reminds me of 80's Punk.

Thanks for the time you took on your reply. I do appreciate the thought. ;)

I love this verse from another tune I wrote...

What would Ayn say if she were here today?

I would love to hear just what she had to say.

Would she tell us that she tried to warn us all?

Folks at the top she would love to see fall.

We'll never know just what Ayn would have said.

Folks at the top better be glad that she's dead.

Wake yourself up are you ready for round two?

I received that feeling as well about economic justice. The other one seemed much more fluid, economic justice just felt forced and grasping out for lyrics to me.

I would like to see this song I am quoting on your myspace though if/when you ever get around to recording it. That seems much better and more along the lines.

  • 2 weeks later...
Did you take moste of the songs offline?

When will there be a CD?

Hi Everyone,

I just put up 3 fully mixed/mastered songs. The CD is being sent off for pressing next week and should be on itunes within the next 2 weeks. They tend to lag on getting new albums added unless your on a major label.

Check em out and let me know what ya think.

Tks!
