"Atlas Shrugged" Movie

Yet another example of an illiterate twit:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111802057...amp;ref=bd_film

It reads "Cameras role on 'Atlas'" rather than "roll" unless they change it by the time you follow the link.

(The only consolation is that this time, it's the reporter for vanity fair, not the producers of the movie.)

It becomes increasingly unlikely this will turn out well (not that I ever thought it could) especially since there's a good chance the Kelly/TAS folks will be involved. (Imagine, as Diana Hsieh pointed out, a TAS produced featurette on O-ism on the DVD....)

Very minor info on the screenwriter's influences:

In my writing, I am influenced by the classics: Poe, Lovecraft, Richard Matheson (I Am Legend is my favorite book), and the Bible.

The books I recommend most are Carl Sagan’s The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, Mark Twain’s Letters From Earth and Barbara Ehrenreich’s Bright-Sided.

This is going to be a god damn disaster. If the guy who is funding this (forget the name off top of my head) actually really did give a damn about that book or anything that it symbolizes he would not dare bother making a movie with such a crap cast and shoddy writer/director/etc. match up as this one. It would have been hard enough to do it justice with a above-mediocre crew, this isn't even mediocre, its a bunch of people that suck at their jobs (with some specific exceptions)! I mean if this is going to be like this at least make it a mini-series not a movie!

As far as I can tell there's not one person involved in this adaptation that has any idea what they're doing (based on past credits).

Also - a 5 million dollar budget?! And a five week shoot?! That isn't a low budget -- it's a NONEXISTENT budget.

I have no doubt in my mind that this is going to go down in flames. There's not a chance in hell that a group of mediocrities can turn Atlas Shrugged in to three films in five weeks with no budget and have it end up being anything other than trash.

If there is a bright side it is that the outcome will be so pathetic that a remake can easily treat the "original" as so unimportant as to be nonexistent, thus making the second, to-be-shining triumph that much greater in comparison.

WHY did Angelina pull out and why couldn't Lionsgate get it together!?

Dagny Taggart. Bargain basement actress.

I am totally disappointed at the news of this movie's development! A total disaster!

Jaskin, I'm curious why you consider the actress portraying Dagny as Bargain basement. Are you familiar with her work. If so, what do you not like about it? What exactly makes her so bad?

I watched an episode or two of her show Mercy on ABC, which was enough for me. She isn't convincing as a "normal" character, so I have no hope for her as a "complex" character like Dagny, one to which few people can relate.

Even Angelina would have had trouble, and I think she's a pretty good actress.

To the movie currently: whatevs.

There is another possibility. The movie dies on the cutting room floor. I'm not sure how many movies are made and never seen but I'm sure there are some. Finding a distributor might also be problematic if it sucks as bad as it promises to.

A bad movie is not the end of the line. The end of the line would be a movie so bad that it garners a sort of cult status.

Like if the movie turns out to be the next Starship Troopers and comes off more as parody of AS than an adaptation? At which point the critics will -love- it because it "lambasts" and "skewers" Rand's "philosophy?"

I was willing to hold back and wait it out, even when I saw the cast. I wasn't familliar with any of them, so I'd wait. And I still am. Maybe. Just the knowledge that the screenwriter is going to draw from the inspiration of a drug addled depressive, a nihilistic racist ass, God, and a socialist to write this movie makes me want to rip my hair out!

But, we'll see. I'm still going to wait, although my expectations did drop a few (hundred) notches at this news.

Edit: Also, someone earlier mentioned the Muppets Doing Atlas Shrugged. I would totally watch that.

A 5 million dollar budget... I guess they will be shooting this on someones camera phone. Dagny Taggart. Up close, shakey and out of focus.

So they are shooting it on the Red Camera with an ARRI Geared Head, not a cell phone. Surprising. They even have a focus puller!

It might not be such a good idea to keep focusing on the five million dolllar budget. They had a deadline to meet. They can raise all the money they want now.

Sure they can, but you've already bought your B and C level cast and crew because you never had a budget to begin with.

Well, there seems to be some harsh opinions on the cast. I don't agree they're bad. At least, let's give them a chance. Also, some good arguments have been made for an unknown cast that won't distract from the message. I mean, take Angelina Jolie. I think she could have played the part well, but between her looks, her kids, her affairs, her travels (by then, probably her split from Brad) .... her movies become secondary.

This is clearly not a serious attempt at making a movie. More likely they're just making a movie to keep the copyrights, and perhaps later sell them for a profit.

If they were serious about it they would have gotten better financing. A 5 million dollar budget is nothing for a movie, and if they really have a good script and a good production plan I see no reason for not getting at least ten times that money(which is still a small budget). Considering the success of the book a movie should have real potential of turning in a good profit. So the fact that the budget looks like a joke tells me they have no intention of trying to make a good movie here(or, at the very best, trying to make a cheap promotional piece to get investors for a serious production).
