Liberals want to secede

I suppose this may be post-election anxiety, but apparently alot of Liberals are pretty miffed over the election. And to be honest, it's not surprising, seeing as how the GOP have the White House, the Senate, the House, Greenspan is about to retire (meaning Bush can appoint someone of his choosing) and the next few supreme court justices will be conservative picked.

on one hand, I say good ridance. Let all the do-gooders go to a single state and then come crawling back to us when they run out of Atlases to bleed dry.

On the other hand, my southern countrymen tried to secede about 140 years ago, and they ended up killing 300,000 of us and completely devastating our economy in their protest of our secession.

what is everyone's thoughts on this? yay, let them destroy themselves, nay we need to work things out, or STFU sore liberals, get over it.?

The problem with these "red state, blue state" maps is that they give the false impression that these whole areas support one guy or the other. As the article points out, these secessionists are in particularly democratic precincts. Even states that went overwhelmingly for Kerry like MA or RI would never be able to secede even if they wanted to. The example set up by the Civil War is too perilous for any state to seriously consider this option. It would be interesting to see what might happen if a president who advocated the dismantling of the welfare state were ever elected. Then I can see perhaps some serious secessionist talk, but short of that I doubt it very much indeed.

I seem to recall from election night that even MA was only about 60-40 for Kerry. The real split is not between red states and blue states but between big cities and rural areas. That becomes obvious if you look at voting by county rather than just the electoral college.

I've heard a lot of whining that the liberals were all going to move to Canada, but very little sign that any will actually do so. I'd be in favor of an exchange with Canada: our whiny liberals for their hard workers who want a chance to be more successful than they can be in Canada.

Also, there is already a good example of what a heavily Democrat-dominated country would look like: DC (where I live). It went 90-10 for Kerry and Democrats are so dominant in local politics that the real elections are essentially the Democratic primaries. DC is a mess: among the highest crime rates in the country despite the strictest gun control laws, among the worst public schools despite the highest spending rates, marginal public services despite high taxes, etc.

Succession is not going to happen. The 2 biggest "Blue" states both elected Republican Governors so they have quite a few Republicans living there. I do wish all these people who say they are going to leave would actually leave. The average IQ level for people in the USA would go up instantly. Besides Canada and the UK are the Socialist Utopias they want to live in and they speak English. What's stopping them?

Canada doesn't want them, or at least is not willing to make a special exception to their immigration laws. They have to go through the same application process as everyone else.

I’ll have to remember that for the next person I hear whining about how they should move to Canada. A humorous response might be “... actually Canada doesn’t want you… too bad for the United States.”

Thats true, a Welfare State can't have open immigration or all the moochers would move there and run the gov't out of money.  :)

Perhaps partly because of this, Canada's immigration system gives immigration applicants points for things like having a skill that is in short supply, having a lot of money to invest in a business, already knowing how to speak English or French, etc.
