Well personally, I take each band as they are and see if I like them (lyrically and musically). I've listened and liked almost every band listed here. But I'd like to take this opportunity to suggest a friend's band called The Fenwicks. The lead singer lists Rand as a positive influence in the music, and publicly support Objectivism on thier website here (New Update: Thu Mar 23 '06 11:21 pm). But as a listener you'd have to like ska/reggae/punk/rock in order to like their style.

Very nice.....thanks for the links...I will have to share this with my 15 year old son. It sounds pretty cool to me as well. I have been trying to find some bands with actual Objectivist lyrics, or ones that are fairly close for a bit. I am not that picky when it comes to music...but I need to balance my love of Tori Amos and Grateful Dead with something a little more rational.

(Saw Chemical Romance in the fall in concert...someone else mentioned them as good music. They are great in concert...not sure if they would be considered objectivist...but fun music!)

Boy, I haven't looked at this thread in ages.

Eudaemonian- I'm not crazy about The Fenwicks. I mean, I don't dislike them, but they just don't do it for me. I think I just don't like the lead singer voice. But thanks anyway.

While I'm at it, I'd like to take a moment to update on bands that I'm into at the moment. Since I've gotten some good music from the people's suggestions, maybe some of you will find pleasure in mine. :) (Oh, and I've included songs if the band has some that really stand out but the others aren't that great.)

In no particular order:

Belle and Sebastian

The Decemberists

The Essex Green (esp Penny & Jack and Sin City)

Of Montreal (esp Requiem to OMM2)

Portastatic

The Arcade Fire (esp Rebellion (Lies))

The New Pornographers (don't be fooled by the name )

The Libertines

The Shins

The Magnetic Fields

Dolour (esp Can't Make New Old Friends)

Neutral Milk Hotel

Rilo Kiley

All of these bands are on iTunes, so check 'em out at your leisure. :)

Well it depends what we are reffering to, lyrics with objectivist themes such as Rush or music that makes us think if that person regardless of what their philosophy may be as achieving an ideal status.

As far as lyrics go, Rush for sure. Most of the songs do have an objectivist theme. Alot of moments in Rand's novels make me play a rush song on my head as the soundtrack. Example, when I listen to Freewill I get the perfect vision of the first run on The John Galt Line. There are other bands that have songs based on Rand's ideas.

As far as bands go, or the leaders behind these bands who have created music that makes me see beond their beliefs and see their achievement. Examples: Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More) Frank Zappa, Devin Townsend and many more.

Neutral Milk Hotel
heh, one day I'll understand why people like NMH :/

However I do enjoy quite a few of the other bands on that list. Based on what you've given, I think you may also like Silver Jews - American Water, Sleater Kinney - The Woods, and maybe Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People. None of them are especially Objectivist, but the topic seems to have shifted.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just put my new CD up on Paypal!!!!! Objectivist hip-hop with trumpet and guitar!! 4 out of 5 subjectivists despise it!!!

Ahem, sorry, for those of you who have expressed an interest in my "objectivist hip-hop" CD, 5 by 5, I just put it up for sale today on exaltron.com. This is a special $10 + $2 flat shipping in the US for Paypal users. The CD will be available from online retailers such as CD Baby, Amazon and Tower records, but they of course will mark it up considerably. Gaddang capi'lists.

You can also check out samples of my stuff over there as well. Here are some lyrics:

..junkies can't put down the pipe of faith and force

they start by takin eighths and now they want forths

distort the source of justice which is reality

tell you that you can't ever trust what you see

but take their emotions as a means to know

prefer to forget that you reap what you sow

and you say it's all open to interpretation

what a clever way to cover your prevarication

present a pathetic justification

for your complete moral abnegation..
