SapereAude
Bill passed in Oregon today. High school students will not be allowed to graduate until they give proof of having applied to college, or joined the military or an approved apprenticeship program. http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1uZhBY/www.good.is/post/oregon-makes-high-schoolers-apply-to-college-to-get-a-diploma/?utm_source=supr

Dante
One the bill's sponsors, Rep. Tobias Read, says the bill isn't "about telling someone what is right for them but helping them make sure they're considering the choices and taking a step towards an option that's right for them." Did he actually say that with a straight face? "We don't wanna tell you what's right for you, but... this is what's right for you."

"We don't wanna tell you what's right for you, but... this is what's right for you." You wouldn't believe the stuff pols in Oregon say with straight faces. It's like San Francisco politics without the pluses of California. On many issues Oregon makes Cali look positively right-wing.
philosopher
Leftists have this idea that everyone going to Uni is somehow an ideal, but not everyone has an academic mindset and they will make some people miserable who could otherwise have had happy lives. Steve D'Ippolito
Your post doesn't go far enough, philosopher. There are people who shouldn't be forced into high school. I can hear the screams of outrage over this but if schools worked as well as they did a century ago, an eighth grade education would be a hell of a lot better than most get out of high school today. In the Socialist Province of Ontario in the Peoples rightly guided State of Canuckistan Students are not permitted to graduate until they have performed 50 hours of volunteer work. you see it's not getting a job that interests the nanny state but ensuring that people are giving back, contributing to the collective. Steve D'Ippolito
I need to use an EPA-approved barfbag thinking about it and be sure to dispose of said bag in an environmentally friendly way.
Amaroq
You've got to be fucking kidding me. On both the law and the "volunteer" work points.
