BurgessLau
Sometimes when I am typing an internal list -- such as: xxxxx: (a) xxxxx, ( xxxx -- and then I do a preview, I get a smiley in place of the "(". How can I avoid the smiley and still keep the "("? Or must I write around the problem by using some other item designation such as "first," "second," and so forth? Ah, it is happening again. Where you see the smiley, I placed the lowercase letter "b" and a right-paren.

non-contradictor
You could also try simply b. or b] if you prefer to leave smileys enabled. Also, if you don't leave a space after the paretheses, the smiley will not appear.
