For a universal to be a universal by definition it cannot be a concrete. Reality is only the concretes which comprise it. Universals are therefore not real, they can only be derived from and justified by concretes. Universals are epistemological, not physical and certainly not metaphysical. Boydstun
Grames, why couldn’t we rightly distinguish between a concrete and a particular along the lines set forth in the preceding post? Universals could apply to either. We could have “square roots of the positive real numbers” which would include the particular “square root of 17.” Why not say that such particulars are not concretes, but such particulars and all universals are real? That is, they are real things with pertinence to concrete existents, but not themselves concrete existents?

dream_weaver
Quote In order to be used as a single unit, the enormous sum integrated by a concept has to be given the form of a single, specific, perceptual concrete, which will differentiate it from all other concretes and from all other concepts. This is the function performed by language. Now, a difference encountered between OPAR and ITOE is which comes last. Assigning the concrete, or in OPAR, the definition. Is the disagreement here on context? That's the impression some of this reads as.
