Atlas Shrugged opens with the question "Who is John Galt?" and reiterates the question and proposes various answers to the question with the book ultimately leading to John Galt publicly addressing the question in the chapter, "This Is John Galt Speaking."

John Galt essentially owns up to being the cause behind the national crisis as he sets forth to contrast it using his world view as the source of his motivation.
