Free Thinker
About a week ago I discovered that a Caribou Coffee was opening up a block from my house. I stopped by it and jotted down the phone number that was posted in the window - with the hopes of getting a job. A few days latter, I received a call telling me that there was going to be a job fair at another local Caribou, and that I should come in a fill out an application. When that day arrived, I went to the store, filled out an application, and was then interviewed on the spot. The interviewer (my future boss), asked me the type of questions that one would expect at an interview: Why do you want to work here? Tell me about yourself, etc. This being my tenth job application, I decided to put it all on the line. I answered his questions by explaining to him the proper relationship between employer and employee, the virtue of hard work, etc. He was so impressed by my interview that he hired on the spot, and told me if I could keep this attitude up, I could become a manager. The store by my house doesn't open for a few weeks, so my boss, is having us train at other locations. I really believe in Caribou. I think it is a fantastic company, with an impressive Mission/Values statement(s): (taken from here ) Mission & Values Our Mission Caribou Coffee... "An Experience that Makes the Day Better" Our Core Values Life is Short... Blaze new trails Be excellent, not average Enjoy what you do Respect diversity Teamwork builds success Success and profit create opportunities Make a difference in our community Our Commitment to Service Guests are always our priority -- everything else waits. (Emphasis added) Cool, huh? Here is something even cooler. While I was at by first day of work, someone brought up the topic of Starbucks. My manager, who everyone expected to berate Starbucks, responded by by saying that Starbucks is an amazing company, who paved the way for companies like Caribou - and no one would ever hear him talk badly about them. HaloNoble6
Excellent, man. Do you know if Caribou allows franchises like Starbucs does? This doesn't take away from your experience and that particular shop, but the main corporate people engage in some really funny business. Check out this link that reveals: Porn, pork and Pabst — you’re safe from them at Caribou Coffee. In an SEC filing last week for its initial stock offering, the Brooklyn Center-based coffeehouse chain noted that it operates its business according to the Islamic principles known as Shari’ah. “A Shari’ah-compliant company is prohibited from engaging in derivative hedging transactions such as interest rate swaps or futures, forward options or other instruments designed to hedge against changes in interest rates or the price of commodities we purchase,” Caribou said in its filing. “Also, a Shari’ah-compliant company is prohibited from dealing in the areas of alcohol, gambling, pornography, pork and pork-related products.”

DavidOdden
Do you know if Caribou allows franchises like Starbucs does?Their current web page says "no" unless you leave the country. Their main sin seems to be that they are part of the growing anti-capitalist trend in business illustrated here (but this could just be lies, of the type that are necessary to keep typical coffe-shop customers happy). I took all the "anti-capitalist" messages in their literature to be simply lip service, like you said.
