Today we address an interesting phenomenon of the iterative process of engaging with written or visual media, and how we interpret different elements within the content every time we revisit the materials.

Your emotional or cognitive state has a profound impact on your interpretation of content. Each time you revisit a text or an audio presentation, it's a common occurrence to understand the content in slightly different ways that differ from initial understandings.

Your attention and concentration are also contributing factors when understanding material. If you lack interest or have a low motivation to pursue the content, this can also lead to poor comprehension which directly effects your ability to understand and make sense of the ideas and concepts. These aspects that effect the comprehension process, will directly lead to a higher cognitive load, as lack of interest will make the activity more cognitively demanding.

In cases where you must learn the material and understand it thoroughly, your poor efforts will not suffice in understanding the text or varying media formats, without some forceful effort. Without emotional investment or motive, the reading experience can create the illusion of a convoluted piece of work that is strenuous as well as cognitively demanding. To alleviate this poor comprehension of text or audio, there are some effective techniques that you can apply which are particularly beneficial for understanding academic texts or required readings that initially may seem difficult.

When you are approaching the material that is relevant and significant to your studies, there are some other helpful ways and techniques to get by this barrier to deep understanding. Some ways to engage the content are to apply active reading strategies, which usually include summarization, or discussing the material with others as this will lend to retention and deeper processing of the content. Without these wider practices some of the material students will encounter can be particularly difficult to understand.

Another approach is to reduce anxiety and stress, as these are culprits that fuel the fire of poor comprehension. Interestingly enough you should also note that reading deeply prior to active engagement with various formats will lend to a more fluid understanding of the content. This is because when you are immersed in the activities you are connecting ideas and concepts and participating in the process of connecting words, structure, tone and fluidity. Reading before pursuing, primes your brain for grasping intonations and verbal expression more effectively.

In summary, people interpret information in different ways, based on their emotional and cognitive states at the time of reading or audio processing. Fluctuating states can lead to a multiplicity of interpretations as you revise and refine your understanding. This highlights the dynamic nature of comprehension and how interpretation of content can fluctuate based on psychological and emotional factors, and phases throughout the day.
