Rand's later years

I'm sort of new to Objectivism, and have a [big] question about Ayn Rand.

Why was Nathienal Brandon removed from the Objectivist movement? Why did he have an affair with Rand, and what was the thinkning on both of their parts? Why didn't their affair last/work? What was Ayn Rand like [as a person] in her later year after that?

There is some insight on this in The Passion of Ayn Rand, by Barbara Branden.

I am reminded of some characters in her books who live in both obscurity and austerity; their reaon for such is they'd rather live this way than live for the sake of others.

I got the impression that Rand's life after, say, 1975 was in obscurity.

I'm pretty sure that this topic has been discussed on this board before, so you might want to do a search for it. As for Barbara Branden's book, be careful about taking her at her word. There is reason to doubt her objectivity on the issue, and there are some pretty detailed critiques of her book available on the web.
