dianahsieh
Originally posted by Diana from NoodleFood, Eugene Volokh has done some good blogging on the horrifying case of Abdul Rahman, the man in grave danger of losing his head in Afghanistan for converting to Christianity. (Did we really fight a war to "liberate" that country from the Islamic radicals?!?) Oh, and Mark Steyn recounts this great story in an op-ed of multiculturalism in action: In a more culturally confident age, the British in India were faced with the practice of "suttee" -- the tradition of burning widows on the funeral pyres of their husbands. Gen. Sir Charles Napier was impeccably multicultural: "You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: When men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks, and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours." If the United States fails to protect Abdul Rahman from these Muslim barbarians, if we permit the government we put in power and now maintain in power to murder a man for rejecting Islam, then we may as well just slit out own throats -- before the Muslims do it for us. softwareNerd
A catchy story. If done right, it has the quality of a "meme". With all the Christian bloggers discussing it, and with it being a world-wide story, there's potential to have it spread. Just got to decide how to "spin" it. softwareNerd
This guy was allowed to go on some kind of technicality and was granted asylum in Italy. With the concrete gone, the principle has been forgotten by the press. Here is a link to a post about the case, written by a guy in Afganistan. My advice is to keep any comments on his blog politely thoughtful as he makes many mistakes made by thousands of westerners who should know better. softwareNerd
Now, some Islamists have abducted an Italian journalist and are asking for the return of Mr. Rahman. You can say this about the Islamists, they sure are principled. Edited October 27, 2006 by softwareNerd
