Dismuke
I recently noticed in Jeff Britting's book that the name of the ship that brought Ayn Rand over to America in 1926 was the De Grasse. One of the things I really love about the Internet is its ability to more often than not give me instant gratification when it comes to my random, spur-of-the-moment curiosity about various things. So I googled the name of the ship and found that it had a rather interesting history in its following decades. One article about the ship, along with photographs can be read here: http://www.greatoceanliners.net/degrasse1.html Another article about it with additional photos can be read here: http://ocean-liners.schuminweb.com/ships/de-grasse.asp This last site has links to other great 20th century ocean liners and their ultimate fates. Some of them were very impressive - and extremely luxurious. I have a lot of magazines from the 1920s that frequently feature ads for steam ship lines. I never really paid all that much attention to those particular ads - but now that I know more about them, I think I will next time I look through them. Certainly I will keep an eye out for any ads for the De Grasse.
