DarkWaters
The new head of the United Nations Committee on Sustainable Development will be Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe, which is presently one of the most brutal and oppressive nations in the world. This position is supposed to specialize in land and economic development. Zimbabwe is possibly the most inappropriate country for this already questionable position considering that the current despotic government embraced a land redistribution program based on race. This appointment is already disgusting enough. However, Syria and Iran have recently been selected to respectively chair and vice-chair the United Nations Disarmament Commission. Iran is the present beacon of Islamic Totalitarianism in the Middle East and Syria is a secular supporter of militant Islamic groups in the theaters of the conflicts with Israel and in Iraq. Syria is widely believed to be behind the recent assassinations of prominent anti-Syrian politicians in Lebanon, who Syria is presently occupying with extreme severity. The only way how these choices could possibly be worse is if North Korea was chairing this committee. You would think that the United Nations would learn after the shameful appointment of al-Gaddafi Libya to the Human Rights Council. Apparently not, considering that the rotating appointees to this body will include members such as Pakistan, Cuba and Nigeria. The United States presently supplies approximately 22% of the $4.2 billion dollar annual budget of the United Nations. With appointments such as the above, I do not see why the United States should give any support at all. Tenure
Wow, if only the United Nations had existed during the 1930s, "And now, heading the Committee for Human Rights, Mr Adolf Hitler. Please move down the Hall if you're looking for the Sustainable Economic Management Convention being headed by Comrade Stalin."
John McVey
Nyeh, the UN does something disgusting. So what else is new. Why are you surprised? I'm actually glad they keep doing this sort of thing as it is continually wrecking their credibility. Pretty soon people wont be called kooks for calling for the UN's disbandment or at least withdrawal from it. JJM
softwareNerd
Yes, those UN committee chairmanships are disgusting. Never a good sign when real life starts to read like satire.
