No matter his origin, the fact is that he couldn’t have gained the knowledge and incentives that allowed him to undertake that fateful journey if he hadn’t been nourished by the best cities and culture of that time. When we add Maritime to “best” in the 15c, we end up with only two city-states: Genoa and Venice.
Just as he lived in Genoa and not Venice, by accident?, he ended up working for the ingrateful, recently unified Spanish Crown instead of the more adventurous and seafaring Portuguese one.
How can any of these details actually affect history and our vision of it? A Polish noble dad? Poland didn’t exist much at the time, if you want to call it either Hanseatic OR Lithuanian I might be more awed.

The new book wouldn’t have sold too many copies if the author’s research revealed that Columbus was the son of a common peasant. Now a conspiracy - that sells books.
