The United States has exactly one WWI memorial, in Kansas City. I visited it back in July. Apparently as of March this year there was still one known living vet and he had come to visit. His enlistment photograph was on a poster with “Welcome Back” (I guess he coincidentally was originally from the KC area).
This is becoming a forgotten war in the US; there is less hazard of that happening in Europe (and probably Canada as well). In many ways it marked the end of the old Victorian-age order worldwide; European world empires began to crumble, the Russian and Austro Hungarian empires expired with totally disparate results; coincidentally (or perhaps not!) the Age of Invention was petering out, modern “art” was coming to the fore…
Not a war that should be forgotten; it was a turning point in history far more than WWII was.
Definitely the last gasp of imperialism.

It’s Remembrance Day or Veteran’s Day when we honour the people (military and civilian) who have died in wars; it is for all wars but especially World War I. It’s quite a big deal here in Britain; we hold memorial ceremonies and the entire country observes a two minute silence.

It’s not so obscure in his context; Canada is far more proactive in remembering WWI. He can hardly be blamed for the fact that in the US it’s just another day you shouldn’t try to go to the post office or bank.

It’s just that I’m more than a little shocked that “Veterans Day” (as the US calls it correct?) is such a forgotten beast in the land o’ Sam. Too bad, between the two nations, yours is certainly the one that owes the greater debt to those brave souls who fought for their freedom, liberty and justice for all.
It is a big deal here in Canada, especially since we are creating a new batch of Veterans. I am actually working today, but I took the time to walk to the national cenotaph after the formal service, crack off a salute, and place my poppy on the tomb of the unknown soldier.
