In describing how a particular investment manager seeks out opportunities, the author phrases it thus: "Just like the frustrated business owners in Ayn Rand’s novel who close up shop and move abroad to enjoy a less fettered commercial environment, … [these busniesses]… are … seeking out opportunities in more vibrant markets. "
The “abroad” part is wrong, but I like it even more for that, because it tells me the author is not really a fan trying to get in a “plug”.
I enjoy seeing Ayn Rand mentioned favorably in the media. Here’s one from today:
CENTURY WALKING TOURS Tomorrow at 11 a.m., “Ayn Rand’s Park Avenue,” meeting at the Met Life Building, East 45th Street, between Vanderbilt and Lexington Avenues. Fee, $15. Information: (917) 607-9019.
Media mentions of Rand and of Atlas Shrugged are commonplace these days. Rare to see a mention of “VoS” by an “ABC News Senior Correspondent”.
“John McCain and Sarah Palin they call this socialistic,” Obama continued. “You know I don’t know when, when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness.”
It’s unclear if this was a nod to the Ayn Rand book “The Virtue of Selfishness,” with all that the invocation of Rand implies.
It would seem to be, given the themes of Rand’s work, what happens when independent achievers are demonized.
Which would fit with this description of those who want to keep their hard-earned tax dollars as “selfish.”
