NAFTA And Other Free Trade Agreements

Your opinion? Are they true " Free trade " agreements or do they add more and more bureaucracy to an already overly- bureaucritized world? Just wanted some opinions. I’m doing a small paper for World Politics class on it, and plan on focusing mostly on the NAFTA.

They’re definitely not free trade, but they do qualify as freer trade.

That’s the oversimplifcation. The reality is much more complex. Tariffs are lower and, in many cases, gone altogether. That’s all good. However, these treaties carry their own protectionist caluses. For example, suppose a US manufacturer were to buy cloth from China and used it to make suits. If he wanted to sell them to a Mexican distributor, the tarifs would be high becuase the raw material did not originate within the NAFTA zone, nor in any zone with which Mexico has a trade agreement.

Still, overall the effects are rather positive.

You could try contacting a Mexican consulate and ask what you’d need in order to export some product to Mexico. That would give you first-hand info.

Thanks for your opinion. As for your suggestion I get in contact with a Mexican Consulate, as I said its a small part of a paper, which is only one part of a group project.

You’re welcome.

You may want to look up certificates of origin. That gave us a headache when imoprting fabrics and, sometimes, buttons from the US and, eventually, from the European Union.

Overall the bureaucratic costs are much less than the old tarifs were. To give you an example, Mexican supermarkets stock a wide variety of American groceries previously unavailable here. Mexican companies have had to hustle to keep up, sometimes importing the stuff themselves, or getting into joint ventures, or coming up with similar products made locally. Prices have gone down too.
