The Objectivist club at UCLA was to host a debate yesterday (Feb 6th) on immigration. Dr. Yaron Brook was to debate someone from the “minutemen” organization.
A organization calling itself “ucla students for a democratic society” sent out a call for people to turn up to protest the “minuteman”. This meant that UCLA had to plan for extra security. The Objectivist club was told that they had to pay part of the cost.
In the end, the debate was cancelled. The idiots from the “ucla students for a democratic society” probably do not even know or care that they missed an opportunity to have the “minuteman” shown to be wrong.
I’m not sure if this left-wing disruption tactic is something they’ve always done or something that has been revived recently. Either way, it is more serious than the issue that was being debated. Perhaps the next debate should be: “Should Campus Club Events be Disrupted” or some such topic.

Perhaps not this organization but there is another organization that has a recenthistory of actively disrupting lectures sponsored by the Ayn Rand Institute. They also disseminate lots of blatantly falsepropaganda against ARI. These guys are crazy.
This has been a common occurrence, in recent times. Some that I remember off the top of my head:
-asking Antonin Scalia if he sodomizes his wife
-hitting Ann Coulter in the face with a pie
-hitting Pat Buchanan in the face with a pie
-asking Ann Coulter if she approves of a marriage where the man “does nothing but fuck his wife up the ass”
A friend of mine was actually at that last one. I feel less sorry for Ann Coulter after seeing her on Hannity and Colmes last night, suggesting that a certain Islamic imam should perform a clitorectomy on Nancy Pelosi.
Note that it says nothing about the program being a *debate*. They make it sound as if ARI was “hosting” a solo lecture by this crackbrain!
I was very sorry to learn that the event had been cancelled. I was so looking forward to seeing Dr. Brook trouce the poor bastard utterly, whomever the hell he is.

When taken in the context of what was obviously meant as sarcasm, I don’t actually disagree with any of those 3 things that you linked to. But the clitorectomy remark made no political point. It was incredibly inappropriate.
I find it funny that Christian conservatives like Coulter are usually the ones arguing for “standards of decency” on television, by which depictions of sex would be regulated. One of the chief arguments is that children will see it, and then the parents will be bombarded with uncomfortable questions by their children. How many kids, last night, do you think asked daddy what a clitorectomy is?

I think you’re dealing with the real “activist” mentality here — the kind that just doesn’t care much for ideas.
Did you read the response that was posted to your well-written and highly principled comments? “Welcome to the forum; I don’t agree with everything you said.” The end, next topic please. That really says it all.
This case is a good illustration of the principle that not everyone who (ostensibly) wants the same things you want is necessarily on your side.
Turns out the joke is on me! I did some further checking and found that this forum is actually an anti-immigration forum, that calls themselves “Americans for Legal Immigration” with the stress being on “legal”. In other words, their platform is that the laws designed to keep people out are just fine; they want the current laws enforced. They don’t to open immigration.
Now, as to why they would want to protest the minuteman, beats me!

She said “She’s lucky he didn’t give her one of those cliterectomies while he was there.” That isn’t exactly the equivalent of suggesting that he should perform a cliterectomy on her.

In barbaric third-world cultures like Islam, forcing women to have cliterectomies is a routine fact of life much like forcing people to pay taxes is in the West. By appeasing cultures like that, Pelosi and her ilk are inviting cliterectomies into America. I didn’t see the rest of the show, but I suppose they were discussing Pelosi’s appeasement of the imam when Miss Coulter made the remark–in which case, it was a very pertinent point to make, and one that very much needed to be made.

Believe me, postmodernists know they are out to destroy us. I’ve argued in the past and consistently that we are at war with Muslims because of PoMo intellectuals. PoMo intellectuals have laid down the red carpet for our enemies and Muslims just happen to the first and most brutal to take advantage of that red carpet treatment. Others are sure to follow. Our weakness against Islamacists puts a big red target on our chests.
PoMos are the equivalent of viruses invading our body, and Muslims, and other groups are the parasites looking to take advantage of our weakness.

I do heed Peikoff’s words, that we need to be concerned with the religious right, but he seems to write off the left as a bunch of nominalists with little power to influence things in the long run.
