Possibility of Asteroid Impacting Earth

I ran across this link posted on slashdot.org:

NASA- Near Earth Object Program

Based on NASA’s analysis, there is a 2.7% probability that this asteroid will impact Earth on April 13, 2029. That’s a 1-37 chance! That’s a high enough probability to raise my eyebrows.

According to an article dated Dec 27 that I read, the chance of impact with Earth is 1.6%. In cases like these, usually when they get closer NASA makes a very accurate prediction of whether it will hit or not.

In 2029, I’m sure we will be very ready to knock a projectile from coming our way. If the asteroid hits, it is not large enough to cause damage on a global scale (but more similar to the one that hit in Siberia).

I found life to be much more relaxing when I stopped worrying about big natural disasters.

Still, they are kinda fun to muse about http://www.xs4all.nl/~mke/exitmundi.htm

just don’t take it that seriously.

This is one case where we can thank God for nuclear weapons.

Given that no big asteroids have hit the Earth since NASA has been making these predictions, how do you know they are accurate at all?

They’re based on the trajectory of the celestial object, as calculated by it’s rate of speed and other factors gravitational physicists know about.

So you are saying that the only way to really know if these predictions are accurate is if a large asteriod hits the Earth??

The latest report is that the asteroid is not going to hit Earth.

Good, I can finally get some sleep!

Ever since the Y2K bug had me scared Sh*tless, and then failed to deliver, the idea of some big asteroid crashing and killing everyone just doesn’t deliver the same thrill that those old doomsday predictions used to have.

You were actually afraid of Y2K?

Yes, back when I was a (near) hopeless mysticist and John Haggie had indisputable proof that he said proved the world was going to end at the stroke of midnight January 1st, 2000. I used to watch his show on a fairly regular basis and “oh my god he makes a disturbing amount of sense” (of course, I was taking everything the bible says as axiomatic truth, so thats why it made sense to me.) Then that night passed by and nothing really happened. That red cloud of particles that had supposedly entered the solar system and would turn the moon blood red that night also never showed up. Ever since that disapointment, It really takes alot to get me agitated about those sort of things.

Of course, he claims that it is because of innaccuracies in the Calendar, and will probably happen somewhere around 2003. Since then I haven’t really seen any of him. With the exception of a history channel special on christian mythology, where his big mug was being interviewed and he said “as far as I’m concerned, I could disapear [in the rapture] sitting here talking to you.”

I wonder how long it will be before people realize he’s a hopeless crock. I can only be thankful that I never wasted any of my money on his paraphenalia.
