In my World Politics/International Relations class the question was posed to the class why, if all states of the world somehow agreed at least on the same form of Government and core values, why should borders and such things matter? What do you believe the use of " Nations " are, in a world that has come to a consensus on such things?
Also, as for my world politics class…I was elected to be the class tutor, which means I finally have a Campus job that doesn’t involve washing dishes or being a security guard.
The existence of such a consensus presumes that all factors relevant to the formation of all laws are identical. There are two problems with this premise:
First, while there are universal criteria for a just legal system, there are also many legitimate social and cultural differences. For example, the wealth of a society determines the degree of due process and severity of punishment that the accused receive. Also, some societies might tolerate some public behavior (such as nudity) that others do not.
More fundamentally, the need for a division of powers in governance comes from the fact that humans are not omniscient, and disagreement is inevitable when it comes to the law. Given that fact, it is better to allow local variations whenever possible. This is why we have the division of federal, state, and local governments. The alternative -a centralized global dictatorship (democratic or otherwise) would be doomed to failure because it would not recognize that different societies have different values.
Another reason why I favor government on the smallest level possible, is that it allows competition. In the U.S., federalism limits the growth of statism because states have to compete for business and people.
