  1. I have to admit, I actually felt very sorry for poor Ebenezer Scrooge.

That the Three Ghosts could emotionally blackmail him into sharing his wealth. :stuart::dough:

Michael Marriott takes on this horrifically evil book.

    Kudoes!

There's no doubt this was one of the most evil books I ever had the misfortune of reading. Scrooge indeed represents the most persecuted minority in the US today: big business. This horrible, evil book just sowed seeds of anti-capitalist fervor in the ranks of the so-called intellegentsia and media, and could have been indirectly responsible for the social fascist Obama getting elected.

  2. But then, why is it inmoral to steal one dollar from a millionaire?

In which way stealing that dollar prevents him from surviving, from living a plenty life of man qua man, from achiving his ideals, values or projects?

Because property rights are something protected by the government and are a natural extension of reason and rationality. By stealing a dollar, you are committing a crime and are liable to be put away for a long time. In an Objectivist society, I do believe theft, however tiny, should be given the death penalty or at least life imprisonment. Its the best way to promote a culture of healthy respect for individual rights, capitalism and freedom.

What is the basis for the inmorality of this one-dollar theft?

It would help if you learned proper English for starters. :stuart:

  3. What is the main religion followed by Objectivist?
Atheism, if you can call it one. Miss Rand was one too.

How does one follow objectivism? I know this is kind of a board range answer. From what I have seen it means that you are fully yourself and don't allow others to effect your decisions which will be base on your drives, logic, and wants.
That would be an excellent start. You'd also need to follow reason instead of so called instincts (which do not exist). Also you need to give your full and whole hearted support to capitalism and the free market. I do believe one needs to believe in the free market more than such superstitious things as God. I always distrust the government, but as long as they serve capitalists, I am okay with the government. The only way the government can serve capitalists is by protecting property rights and individual rights of all its citizens. It should also never interfere in the economy. There should be full separation of the state and economy as between the state and religion.

Another favorite quote of mine: "There is no such thing as society." - Margaret 'Iron Lady' Thatcher

How is love mixed with objectivism as love is normally seen as a selfless act? Again from what I have seen/read as normal you find someone you like and love to hangout/talk/sex/etc. with and that that with give you pleasure which is a selfishness, while at the same time giving pleasure to your girlfriend/wife.
You cannot say "I love you" without saying "I". ^_^

I'm new so my views are probably way off but it gives you a better idea of what I'm asking.

I am a learner too and I tried to answer well to the extent I could. :)

  4. The US is richer than ever. In places like Chile, socialists were crushed in favor of the free market and look how it has made them richer. In places like China, Hong Kong, South Korea etc the free market reigns, though civil liberties are not preserved. Laissez Faire and individualism are winning the fight against collectivism and the proof is in the pudding. Obama is screwing up so badly that it is almost guaranteed that a Republican will win in 2012 which would mean less socialism and more capitalism (not giving a clean chit to the GOP here, please note). I don't think there is a "recession" either. I think that is a deliberate ploy by the government to bring in more regulations and crush the free market. Also have a look at Miss Rand's book sales. They're through the roof! Something must be going right for that to happen! The only major barrier I see is Islamic totalitarianism, which will need to be dealt with by continuing the War on Terror and focusing it on Iran, Saudi Arabia etc. I am not averse to using nuclear bombs against those people.

  5. Does this claim have any validity?

This is a Marxist theory, a theory that the top wealth in any system benefit from the poor being poor.

    Examples of this theory include:

    - Rich people benefit from the poor being ignorant

    - Rich people benefit from the poor being desperate

Rich people are rich because of their innate abilities and superior virtue. They don't need"poor people", who're poor because of their stupidity or innate disabilities, to be anything.

Also, there is no such thing as the "people". Its all individuals. There is no such thing as society. these are important logical considerations before answering such questions. Marxists, because of their innate evilness, conjure up hocus pocus theory to create fascism.

  6. I am surprised that noone has mentioned starting a business. :pirate: If you do have good ideas, I'd advise you to go ahead and start a business and live a truly moral life: a non-altruistic egoistic one. It has worked well for a lot of people. Thank God (just an expression) our economy is not completely socialistic yet, although we're getting there with all this talk of "regulations"!

  7. Thanks for that long post. It explained some things well. I don't mind the name of the war, as long as we are fighting. Obama is definitely waging a war on freedom with his openly socialist policies at home, but abroad, he seems to be carrying on Bush's work admirably. However, IMO I don't see the Iraq and Afghanistan wars as altruistic, as they did help in protecting our economic interests in the Middle East. In the sense that we carried out our self defense after 9/11 (which some seem to have forgotten about), I did and still do support these wars and would definitely support wars against the centers of Islam including Iran, Saudi Arabia etc.

Also I'll try to pick up that book you mentioned.

  8. So basically, I'm saying that if the government doesn't assure education, health, and all the basic services (even highways, etc), people won't get them through capitalists' eagerness to earn profit or there intelligence to see a business.
Here, you just inventing a fictional entity called the "people". There is no such thing. We're all individuals. The motive for profit is what makes the West civilized. We do not want to go back to the dark ages (aka socialism) by going against profit.

If all needs were satisfied through that than there wouldn't be so much poverty.
Nonsense. As long as there continue to be lazy, stupid people who refuse to work, there will be poverty. Read the Austrian school economists.

It looks more like most capitalist tend towards monopolies if they can.
This is only because of government intervention.

By abolishing governments intervention in the economy, the world will become a just place?
We're not concerned with "a just place" or anything of that sort. We're just concerned with individual rights and freedoms and as long as individuals don't tread on others' freedoms, that will be as just a society as we can have. The government has a monopoly on the use of force. This monster called the government should be curbed as much as possible. It should be made available only for protecting property rights of all citizens. The government causes all the problems, and can never give solutions.
  9. As odd as the title to this thread sounds, the National Federation of the Blind decided to sue Target, saying that they did not do enough to make their web-site accessible to people with disabilities. (Being smart, they sued in California.)

Target asked the case be thrown out on the basis that the Americans with disabilities Act (ADA) did not apply to web-sites. The judge thought otherwise. She said: the act "applies to the services of a place of public accommodation, not services in a place of public accommodation" (emphasis mine).

The suit will therefore proceed. A negative ruling against Target could impact a large number of US-based web-sites.

    (Link to ComputerWorld article.)

This is just illegal and goes against the legitimate rights of businesses. Our quasi-socialist government continues to force businesses to curb their rights. How long can we let this go on?

  10. I suggest you rethink your position here; Objectivists have serious issues with both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
What issues are those? Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism are still a huge obstacle to individual rights and freedoms for all Americans and other countries too, especially Israel. I'm sorry to say that you sound like a liberal peacemonger here. My point was that I supported the War on Terror, although Bush messed it up with his idiocy. I'm sorry if I worded it wrongly. I don't think Objectivists are redneck warmongers. I see the War on Terror as a war of self-defense as well as one of protecting our economic interests abroad. I'm glad Obama in spite of his rhetoric is continuing this war. I would definitely support Obama if he does start a war against the brutal Iran theocracy.

you should work on your rhetoric.
    I will.
  11. If you were kidnapped and given the options to either (one) kill a stranger who is also being held hostage, one who has done absolutely nothing to you, who has not first initiated violence, etc. by which case, you will be released... or (two) kill yourself so that the stranger may be released... or (three) refuse to act and the kidnapper will finish you both rather brutally... how would you respond? Explain why.
I'd kill the other guy. Selfishness is the highest ideal.
  12. Well, Christians did go on periodic killing sprees for hundreds of years until the Enlightenment. The Middle east has not gone through such a period, so it is not surprising violent religious based violence occurs so frequently there.
Is it our fault that they have not had The Enlightenment? Its obvious that in spite of all education and technology available to them, as provided by the western colonialists, the stubborn Middle Easterners have refused to come into a rationalistic world view even after gaining their little "independences". They stubbornly stick to medieval ideologies. We in the west do not have to apologize for it when they come over here and terrorize our troops. How can anyone explain the total disproportional development between the west and those Middle Eastern countries? Why haven't the people had capitalism for so many years while the west has had it for so many centuries?
