Asked about France’s proposal, Bolton told reporters, “It is very hard to understand from the people calling for a ceasefire how you have a ceasefire with a terrorist organization like Hizbollah.”
“I am not sure that conventional thinking about a ceasefire makes any sense when you are dealing with a terrorist group that fires rockets at civilian populations and kidnaps innocent Israelis,” he added.
Finally, a politician who makes sense!
The press in the U.S. is reporting that the U.S. has given Israel a week or two to do what it wants, before the U.S. will step in with diplomacy. Some commentators imply this is a good thing, others are using the usual spin of “this is turning the Arab street against the U.S.”.
A big part of this battle is ideological. The U.S. government should address reports like this head-on, stating clearly that it will not accept guilt for its actions. The U.S. government should address the reports and say something like this (fiction):
“It has been reported that the U.S. government is not intervening and has held back Ms. Rice’s visit to the region, in order to give Israel a week or so to hit the Hezbolla. While generally correct, we would like to point out an important error: the U.S. government wants terrorists like the Hezbolla neutered, no matter how long it takes.”
