  1. I'm trying to find out more about his proclaimed "Objectivism".. so far, I have yet to see any contradictions or misunderstandings to the overall philosophy. It would be nice to know that the founder of Wikipedia truly held to Objectivist principles
  2. While I don't doubt that this kid is a genius, there is no way that he can be can considered an authority on science quite yet. Having a PhD level understanding of math makes him an expert on deduction, but he could not have possibly tested a theory that cosmologists have dedicated their life to. His question about carbon has been addressed before. Let's acknowledge that he is brilliant, but also acknowledge that he is still 12 and still has much to learn about science. Also, let's remember that "The Blaze" is a website founded by Glenn Beck. Glenn Beck is not a scientist, and I would hardly call anything associated with him to be accurate.
  3. "[Mother Teresa] was not a friend of the poor. She was a friend of poverty. She said that suffering was a gift from God. She spent her life opposing the only known cure for poverty, which is the empowerment of women and the emancipation of them from a livestock version of compulsory reproduction." — Christopher Hitchens

  4. Mathematical proof that god does not exist.

The description in the video made me laugh the most.

  5. They're being taught to articulate their beleifs, what's wrong with that? You can be a very intelligent person, study regularly, and still be unprepared to respond to challenges to your knowledge. This may be why William Lane Craig wins so many debates, despite rehashing ancient arguments and never changing his formats.
  6. Hey.. you know, it's possible that it could be like "Saturday Night Fever" type musical.. where the characters themselves aren't singing, but there is a song playing in the background. Yeah. That's what I'll tell myself.
  7. "Science and mathematics were to be removed from the hands of the merchants and the artisans. This tendency found its most effective advocate in a follower of Pythagoras named Plato." and: "He (Plato) believed that ideas were far more real than the natural world. He advised the astronomers not to waste their time observing the stars and planets. It was better, he believed, just to think about them. Plato expressed hostility to observation and experiment. He taught contempt for the...

  8. Perhaps replace "Socialist" with "Marxist" Everything else I have a complaint with was already addressed by others
  9. My psych professor talked about different hypotheses (Existential, universal, analytic, synthetic) hypotheses. The moment she started talking about an "analytic" hypothesis, I had a feeling synthetic hypothesis was coming up. It was almost exactly like Kant's dichotomy. Analytic statements = inherently true, whereas synthetic statements are not. The question I have is: Is there any validity in learning about the distinction between an "analytic" statement and a "synthetic" statement? Is it proper to identify an "analytic" statement as something that can't possibly be false by definition, and a "synthetic" statement as the opposite? Was Ayn Rand's only objection to the dichotomy the assumption that "synthetic' statements can't be true?
  10. My psychology professor just blamed it on global warming. Oh brother. Facepalm. A tragedy can never just be a tragedy - it has to be connected to something.
  11. Where does it say in the article that he blamed the victim for what he wore?
  12. From what I've seen so far, it's pretty funny.
  13. What makes you so sure it was a slip?
  14. By definition, Jewish is not an ethnicity. It was only used to denote ethnicity during the Holocaust, and I guess it's something that managed to stick with us
  15. New question. If someone were to say "Every single word meant the exact same thing as it did five seconds ago", is the burden of proof on them?
  16. You may be surprised to know that most Republicans actually hate the Westboro Baptist Church, and have no reason to be biased in favor of them. Even most religious groups want them to shut up. The Westboro Baptists are Christian cannibals. Also, I would hardly call these people "right-wing". Fred Phelps is a registered Democrat, and many WBC folks were against the war in Iraq. Not everyone who is virulently homophobic and deranged is right-wing.
  17. http://pewglobal.org/files/2010/12/Pew-Global-Attitudes-Muslim-Report-FINAL-December-2-2010.pdf See, that's the problem. You're watching newscasts, I'm looking at sources that are based on statistics. If you want to know how much Islam is important to everyone, CTRL + F "Islam's Influence" and "Support for Severe Laws" after clicking on the link above. You will find that Egypt ranks very high on the Islam-based dictatorship concerns. Libya and Tunisia, probably not so much. It's unclear with them. Also, Iranian ships are sailing up the Suez Canal for the first time in decades. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/142433
  18. It seems like the revolts are happening because the dictators in question aren't muslim -enough-
  19. Uh.. what? You might want to look around, dude.. I saw about two just reading the "recently updated topics" on the forum index for each page.
  20. You won't have to worry about retirement if Paul Kruger gets his way
  21. I'm not sure what you're saying, to be honest. Are you saying that logical positivism = verificationism?
  22. Icosahedron: You have to remember that Yaron Brook has to take into account his audience. Taking the deist founding fathers to task for mentioning a "creator" would have alienated a large chunk of his audience. When you're doing a public speech, you can't alienate your audience. There are many issues that Tea Party is notorious for having flawed philosophical understanding of: abortion, homosexuality, separation of church and state. You just shouldn't bring it up when at least half of your base may disagree with you on the role of religion in politics. Hook the crowd first. Let them learn more about you, and one day - they'll come across the video, speech, or article that addresses why politics should not be influenced by faith.
  23. So... what has United Nations done to sanction human rights again?
  24. Obama is... whatever we currently have a problem with apparently
  25. Hate to hijack this thread, but: Does an ambulance have the same rights to bring a patient to a hospital, as policemen have a right to drive on roads to catch criminals?
