  1. If she makes threats to your family then it becomes a legal issue and you can make a police report about it, after that you can take that to a mental institution and they will keep her there and study her until they determine if she is safe to live with your family.

If it's not that serious then your mom needs to take control of the situation and convince her to take therapy sessions. I know you're saying she refuses to but it is possible to convince these people, believe me I've seen it done. Tell your mom to not give into her whims. She may throw a fit but eventually she'll get the idea that her parent is not falling for it.

  2. Since as of February 2006 I am eligible to become a U.S. citizen, I wanted to inquire what was Ayn Rand's oath of allegiance when she was naturalized. If anyone has a source they could link to or a book where this information is available please post it here. There may be a part to omit in my oath as the guide to naturalization states that I have the right to do so.

  3. Look on the bright side: you can use your name as a conversation starter to bring up your own ideas.  And be careful that your change doesn't backfire: I changed my name at 16 from Dennis to David to choose a Jewish name over a Greek one, and now I consider a Greek root closer to my values than a Jewish one.

I will keep that in mind.

Interesting question. I know there have been a number of discussions about the legal/ethical issues of naming businesses, bands, musical works, etc., after AR's characters. But naming yourself? That's a new one . . .

Yes you are right. I am sure there are plenty of other names.

    Excellent idea!

    How about...

    Mel Goldsilberothschildowitz?

 I'll put it on the list

  4. I have the opportunity to change my name next year due to some paper work that gives me that option. I am currently named after a zealot communist that his name is not even worth of mention. Yet despite this bad influence from my family I am an objectivist. I will also soon close a business-working a way to get out of the contract-that I am a member of, due to unfair practices that do not coincide with my values. So I was thinking of perhaps changing my name to Hugh Akston or something different from the name that I have. Ayn Rand's work has changed my life and I am not about to give my rebirth up, for some irrational guilt. What do you think?

  5. Then something funny happened about five or six months ago.  I was watching the movie Misery (the one based on the Stephen King book) and, oddly enough, that was what got me thinking about Ayn Rand again.  It was the scene in which the author burned his own book, the one that was forced out of him by the crazy woman that brought Objectivism back into my mind.  I thought "how can anyone think they have a right to someone else's work, and have the effrontery to force it out of them?"  I guess I should be embarrassed that I didn't immediately see the good in what I had read earlier, that some corny horror movie should bring the issue up, but in a mind as full of malformed ideas and confused rationalizations as mine was, things don't work out the way they should.

Mysery is my favorite movie of all time :D

  6. I too enjoyed The Chronicles of Narnia when I originally read the series (indeed I read it several times over), but was rather disappointed when I learned that Aslan was really a representation of Jesus. As I look back at the plot I can sort of see where that ties in, (when Aslan is killed by the witch and then resurrected) when Lewis describes the enigmatic feline as (not exact words) being the son of someone more powerful residing "across the sea". This kind of spoiled it for me, and I could never read it the same way again. The ending of the last book also has the characters resurrected in some sort of aferlife. Even then it still doesn't detract from the adventuresome spirit which guides and dominates the book. Just read the novels with a healthy dose of sophistry, and you'll be fine. :D

Ha I'm glad I didn't get that far as a kid then. I read most of them but never got to where Aslan died. They were interesting to read as a kid but I did not pick up on the religious agenda. Now they are a vague a recollection of images in the back of my mind.

  7. Being a writer, I think another good way to possibly spread OO.net and Objectivism as such would be to put together a book of these possiblities.

First, Personal stories, what got you interested in Objectivism in the frist place and why, and how has it changed your life. Second, a compilitation of aspiring Objectivist writers works, poems and short stories as such. This could help spread the word of Objectivism in two ways. First it would help these young writers get their works published and names spread, which could possibly lead to further oppurtunities for the writers to get more works published. Last, a combination of the two could also effectively work.

I completely agree. I think that contributing our thoughts truly expands objectivism beyond the work that Ayn Rand has already acomplished. Published works would be great, but I have also heard of online books where writers add content to it, provided they use peer-reviews. Something like http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/C573 shows what it could be like. Due to changes in management the site is not quite what it used to be, but the principles that it was originally built under are still solid.

  8. you may want to try http://www.truebasic.com/demo.asp the bronze demo. It's a compiler for the True Basic language. It will teach you the basic concepts of

    Let, Print, End, Run

    Input, line input

    Constants, Variables, string, numeric

    formulas, math operators

    For-Next, Do-While

    If-Then, If-Then-Else

    data read

    Arrays

    Subroutines, Functions and the rest.

Then search google for exercises, believe me it should make a difference spending a couple of days. The demo gives you 15 minutes everytime you run it. So basically save your progress ever 15 mins and then open it again. If you like it ofcourse, then you may want to buy it.
