  1. * Charity: sacrifice of value, which could be “selfless” (at times), “morally selfish” (most of the times), or “blatantly selfish” (at/most times). ** Altruism: sacrifice of value, which is touted as being selfless, ALWAYS. The more the degree of selflessness, higher is one’s altruist character. Such that, selfless sacrifice of value (selfless charity)= altruism. *** Sacrifice “OF VALUE”: sacrifice that’s HAVING value, but in No WAY it will lead me to sacrifice any of my values. and it is different from charity and altruism wherein one was sacrificing values, whether selfish or unselfish. So, sacrifice having value=Sacrifice “OF VALUE” =! (read not equals) sacrifice of value my point was sacrifice of values must not be allowed/encouraged but same shouldn’t be the case with sacrifice having value. As in that particular example where one was parting with a paltry sum, that was otherwise to be used in buying movie ticket, to feed a homeless (yes, say the homeless did use the money for eating). By doing so (strictly in the context of the mentioned instance) did one loose any of his/her objectivistic idea—according to me ‘No’, coz I didn’t compromise with any of my values. Sorry for the confusion with sacrifice of value and sacrifice "OF VALUE". ("OF VALUE"= having value).
  2. Instead of a homeless man if I bring a homeless 4-5 year old in the picture and use my trivial value to buy a meal for him, would I still be compromising with Objectivist mindset??? Its not sacrifice of value..............but is "Sacrifice" "OF VALUE" Ok, lets get back to that homeless man If one can guarantee that that teenager might use the money for his studies ONLY?? what if he falls for some addiction...........or for that matter if the movie is smash hit, that ticket which I was to buy could have very easily be bought by some other person........ and if the movie is a dud then to hell with the operating incharge who foolishly dared to put his money in the project. What if the money raised with the film is used by some mafia specializing in drugs and other unscrupulous activities. What if the homeless man actually buys the meal from some food-cart owner who then uses the same money for his pupil studies...........oh... one can always put in their own stories to prove the point......lets keep the example as simple as put by One Prime Mover: who wants to use his trivial money to buy a day meal for homeless. My answer:if thats the case its not sacrifice of value..............but is "Sacrifice" "OF VALUE". just make sure that your trivial Sacrificial money "of value" is used to buy a day meal only (or is used for good and not opposite). I hate the term charity and never compare it with "sacrifice OF VALUE". But if its always possible for us to make sure that ones hard earned money is been used for good??? Altruism is sacrifice of value but what is "Sacrifice" "OF VALUE"?? I guess this falls within the Objectivist regime.
  3. Reason: uses the use of "mind" Faith: uses the use of "heart" (in most of the cases, if not always) I would prefer the use of word "faith" when I have no "reason" to solidify my claim.
  4. My grandpa first used the name Fountainhead and instructed me to read the same. As my grandpa has very fine literary skills, so based on his instruction I issued the book from my college library. Till that time I was more into suspense reading so Lady Rand's ideas were somewhat new to me, I simply adored the character sketch of Peter Keating but found Howard's character to be a harder-to-believe-in type. To me the book was different. Recently when I met one of my cousin he said to me that he's reading the same book and also wanted to know my views about the book, to this my answer was "yes, the book was different, but I would certainly prefer O Henry over Lady Rand". few days back when I was sitting idle in the office I decided to check novels which were available online. I guess that was my lucky day, I happened to open the page wherein d'Anconia's statement "if money is the cause behind all evil" was published. The impact of that statement was so profound that I decided to check every material which was in one-way-or-the-other related to Objectivism. I took the printout of Anthem from my office and read the whole 12 chapters on the same night. The next day I said to my sister that she should present me Atlas Shrugged as my birthday present, and I am glad she did. I still am reading Atlas Shrugged and it's truely liberating experience for me. (And this is how I also came to know about this forum.)
  5. Good heavens: Thank you for saving me. No, i am not new to English language, rather i earn my living by editing hard-core technical books, written in ENGLISH only. Thanks for clarifying my query, but i guess many still needs to be answered. P.S.: i am not taking anything in a lighter mood here but if i will say that i want to give my views, my OWN views, whether they are in agreement with Objectivism or not, can i post them. The rules say that this act is not banned but is most certainly discouraged.
  6. SMS lingo: language used in SMSing. words such as, B4, g8, coz, evr, nvr, vn, etc, etc. dat is wat i meant.
  7. i posted my first entry and within minutes received a reply from Tea to take into account the spelling, grammer, and other rules that are to be followed while posting an entry. By that time i had no idea that i actually won't be able to edit my post once its been posted, but while scrolling i happen to make another mistake, which was: i happen to select trash can option. And moments later when i tried to search for my post it was only to be found in the trash can. But what to do now, when i want that particular post of mine to be made available to other people. can i post it again?. But what if the same post is read by people in trash can, without they having the idea that this post is actually present under some other topic. do i only have reply option in hand? what if i want to delete my post permanently? not only this my topic is wrongly spelt? can i do anything? yes, from next moment on i'll be careful. also if after checking the preview i decide not to post my entry, can i be able to do it? if sms lingo is not allowed? i hope this time i have committed less mistakes. oh.......btw... i follow my signature way to closely........"human stupidity is infinite".
