  1. ...

BTW I neglected to mention boxing. The mystery isn't in the objective, which is to render the other man unconscious by repeated blows to the head, but the fact that such a barbaric practice is regarded as a sport. It's more like a ritual, legalized form of assault. It's not that it's a violent spectacle, but that it isn't more or anything other than violence. And what's with the lack of clothes? A mating display of some sort?

Boxing is kinda like the individual version of Football.

In Football, you have 11 guys who all must work together, doing their part to move the football down the field. And there are 11 guys on the other team who must do their part in concert to prevent that. Any one mistake by any man can potentially be exploited with disastrous results for the opposing team. (BTW, Basketball can be like this as well, especially College Basketball).

In Boxing (and other martial arts), you have much the same aspects, with just one guy on each "team". Just like you can have quick-strike capabilities in Football (Arizona in the 1st qtr. against the Eagles), you can have similar situations in Boxing (Mike Tyson in his prime). Boxing just has a "mercy" rule.

  2. I hope so. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Cards could be the team to beat next season.

:( Counting out the Lions already, eh? :(

    :(

How large a space would Boldin leave on the salary cap if he leaves? Arizona is not hurting for offensive talent, not even in the receiver positions. They did well enough against the Steelers with Bolding and Fitzgerald almost neutralized. I'd concentrate on beefing up the defense.

I don't think it's so much about the salary cap if he leaves. He was really cheap this year, and now he's looking to get PAID. Can't blame him for that.

If they lose Boldin, that would take away a huge chunk of yards, and detract quite a bit from their 3 receiver set. Remember, he has gone over 1000 yds./season for 4 out of the 6 seasons he has been in the league. Having the 3 great receivers (with Breaston) together out there opens up the running game as well. They have a pretty good offensive formula right now. You don't want to mess with it too much, IMO.

I don't think so. It would run dry in a month at most and then I'd have to dig it up come September. I'd rather just start it then (I'm also thinking of naming it "Steelers 2009") :P

    I don't care. I want more Football!!! :)

  3. The Pro Bowl has come and gone (mostly gone) and now officially the drought begins anew.

    :( :( :(

Now very little will happen until the draft. The big off-season story may be whether Kurt Warner retires or not. Lesser stories will include some of the coaching changes, plus off season trades. See you next fall.

I hear Mike Martz is being considered for Arizona's vacated Offensive Coordinator position. This may delay Warner's retirement.

I also hear Larry Fitzgerald is willing to restructure his contract to ensure Boldin's return. This would probably allow them to concentrate on their defense in the draft, and give them the best chance of repeating this season's success (despite Vegas' odds-makers' skepticism).

D'kian, I think you should start the "NFL 2009" thread now. :)

  4. Having done a cursory perusal of the website in question, it seems it is a joke. The over-the-top actions like the one you cite, plus some of the ones that don't get acted upon, seem to indicate that the site is not sincere in its support of The Anointed One, Barack Obama, may Allah bestow peace upon him. :D

  5. ...

Basically, this action will limit executive pay to that of the pay of the President. Compensation envy?

Yeah, 'cause those wage & price controls worked so well for Nixon. <_<

Except in this case, there are no price controls, so the only possible justification is envy. :dough:

  6. Deification? Hardly. People were excited, mostly because he was the first black president. Most presidents have a few months where a majority of the country is happy with him.

The worst parts of the Obamania are placed more with Hollywood, and those creepy pledge commercials.

    <off-topic>

Your use of the term "Obamania" makes my point. :P

Do I think the broad population in general views the man with sickening reverence? No. But it seems many do, and a lot of those are in positions where they can impose a modicum of influence over the culture. This is to what I refer.

  7. An IQ of 200 if nothing else is a demonstration of superior reasoning ability. ...

I am not sure this follows. In any case, even those most able to reason will come to wrong conclusions if they start from incorrect premises.

  8. Well, ideally it would do both. The problem is that it presents the things that Marx used as the *basis* for his ideas as though they were facts instead of saying "this is what Marx believed the facts were and what conclusions he drew from that".

A LOT of people have a hard time making that distinction and don't realize that they are very definitely supporting a given view by presenting its thoughts on what the "facts" are *as facts*. ...

    From the OP:

Anyway, I finally came to the chapter on Marx, and found an interesting "description" of capitalism. Whether or not the book's author is actually espousing Marx's views is unclear - he often presents a given philosopher's views as if they are fact, so as to put the reader in the mindset of the philosopher.

Apparently, that was the aim of the author. Also apparent is that he/she did a good job.

  9. I think this will be his third trip to the Superbowl and he already has a ring, an impressive record for any QB.

If this doesn't seal this former grocery store clerk's trip to Canton, then entry into the Hall of Fame will have become meaningless. Without Warner, neither St. Louis nor Arizona would have even had a sniff at the big game.

  10. ...

I'm thinking that the USA is headed for a polarized political system with the new-age socialists heading the Democratic Party on one side, and born again fundamentalists in charge of the Republican Party on the other.

    We are pretty much there.

As to Ron Paul/whoever....it seems that we (Objectivists) tend to let the perfect be the enemy of the good sometimes. It is simply a political reality that an Objectivist President (even as a candidate) is highly unlikely anytime soon. Should we then be reduced to either voting against Brand X vs. Brand Y (or vice versa) or abstaining until an Objectivist "Messiah" comes along to liberate us? Face it, we are destined to be voting for the lesser of evils for the foreseeable future.
