  1. "I agree that the problem is with ourselves. The problem, however, will not be corrected without effort to publicly raise awareness and criticize the phenomenon so that people will be more savvy of it. AdBusters is doing this and no one else is right now." Punk, this is why forums like this one, and ARI, and other Objectivist groups and organizations exist. It is the only philosophy (correct me if I'm wrong) that promotes the use of one's mind in making rational decisions, instead of say, purchasing a new toothbrush because the commercial made you feel good. If you think that this is the serious issue that you make of it, then maybe the promotion of a rational philosophy would be better than the anti-consumerism, anti-everything, and basically anti-life promotions of Ad-busters. Without this philosophical basis, the revolutionary thought-emotion connection made by Ayn Rand, the pursuit is useless. How else are you to back up the claim that "branding" is wrong?
  2. Speaking of environmentally friendly children's shows, does anybody remember the SMOGGIES???
  3. I'm studying fashion design actually, as part of a four year university degree. Fashion does not arise out of nowhere. It is usually greatly influenced to some degree by what is going on in the world. Sometimes that's a good thing, and other times not. It all depends on how the designer interprets it all. Form follows function. Fashion is the style or styles most popular at a given time, and style is reflected by line, silhouette and details. Personnaly, i think that fashion fluctuates because designers would be bored otherwise. It's fun to switch it up every other season. But of course, in the end, the customer dictates the trends, no matter how crazy the stuff on the runway may be!
  4. Wow, somehow they managed to turn The Incredibles message into a hate Bush message. That whole article was a jumble of disorganized thoughts. I couldn't make myself read the whole thing. It's sad to see someone understand ideas so well, and yet reject them.
  5. I saw Garden State about 2 months ago, and I found it to be a movie about characters searching for value, but never truly finding the solution. I thought it was very symbolic of most young adults in this day and age. Very depressing if you ask me.
  6. Don't know if anyone mentioned it elsewhere, but I find it very sad that Christopher Reeves has passed away. I truly admired his strength and courage, and was looking forward to see him blow everyone away when he would walk.
  7. Beautiful! But the pool kinda looked creepy, kinda like a horror film. Otherwise, I'd move there.
  8. Okay, well, I'm calmer now, and I appreciate the advice, and have come to the conclusion that I will just have to shut up in class, if I am to continue. Yes, DPW, I have a boyfriend, who is an obj. but were doing the long distance thing, and I can't just call him up whenever I want to complain about something. I'd just like to meet some other objectivists on campus, that would be really cool. But so far, no. Thanks for your advice though, I just needed some rational thought on the situation, so that I could move on.
  9. I now totally understand what students go through. I took a two year break and just started my first year in Fashion Design. So far so good, until today. I had my Art History class this afternoon, and it was horrible. My teacher is an extremely sarcastic woman, obsessed with stressing that you have to take into account everybody else's religions, calendars, etc. when studying the history of art. We were discussing that during the Neolithic age, greece and other territories progressed much faster than England. She actually said that the climate had something to do with it, but that while other countries, such as Greece, were developing writing and language, they were 'thinking'. About what I asked her, and how did she know this, what was the evidence? She just said that there was proof of trade between the less developped places and Greece for example, and that just because they didn't develop writing, that did not make them anymore inferior. Then she explained, there are no superior ways of communication among men, they are just different. When I mentioned the abstraction necessary in order to develop writing vs. drawing, she simply told me that "abstract is relative". I was shocked. As much as I have been reading about the university atmosphere during the past couple of years, the experience is awful. I'm thankful that the rest of my class are more hands on, less lectures. How do you deal with this? I objected to most of her irrational comments, but it simply amused her in an annoyed way, and shocked the rest of the class in a disapproving way. I really don't think I have the ability to convert either of them. I have thought of creating an Objectivist club on my campus, which is Ryerson University in Toronto. Any suggestions of ways to relieve my anger? I'm just glad the class is on Friday afternoons, so I have the weekend to recover.
  10. Thanks for posting that editorial, it was a great way to start the day. Even though I live in Canada, I do plan on eventually moving to the States and I cannot stand Bush's attempts to integrate religion into government. Either way, if he succeeds, it won't be long before it is integrated up here.
  11. Thanks, but is there anywhere else but Ebay that sells that kind of stuff??
  12. Rearden Steel t-shirt!!! That's so cool! Where'd you get it??
  13. I just saw the film the other day, and I really enjoyed it. Although, unfamiliar with the story, I was annoyed that Lancelot had to die, because I really liked his character, and was frustrated that Guinevere didn't get together with Lancelot, as I found the movie hinted at an attraction there. I did not like Arthur himself very much though. But all together, it was a nice change from all the other bad movies out there.
  14. Speaking of global warming, I was on the plane the two days ago, and the movie they were playing was "The Day After Tomorrow". Disgusting.
  15. I think that I have a favorite shade of every color.
  16. I'm impressed!! Very nice page!
  17. A positive article It's from a very good online monthly newsletter from Quebec. Hope the address works. Atlas Shrugged in The Business School Damnit, I thought it was in Quebec, but it's in Virginia, being reported about in Quebec. Oh, well....
  18. I didn't like the choices of answers. I would have liked them to be less specific and more in terms of principals.... 1. Spinoza (100%) 2. Ayn Rand (75%) 3. Nietzsche (66%) 4. Aristotle (64%) 5. David Hume (62%) 6. Kant (62%) 7. Jean-Paul Sartre (60%) 8. St. Augustine (55%) 9. Stoics (55%) 10. Aquinas (51%) 11. Prescriptivism (44%) 12. Epicureans (41%) 13. Jeremy Bentham (41%) 14. John Stuart Mill (41%) 15. Nel Noddings (38%) 16. Cynics (37%) 17. Thomas Hobbes (36%) 18. Plato (30%) 19. Ockham (16%) Who's Spinoza??? I ended up having to chose none of the above on several occasions, because I didn't fully agree with many of my choices. Does that make me a Spinoza?????
  19. I still think the movie blowed, but a funny part is that oriental lady with the violin who sings the Spidaman song. That's about it.
  20. The problem for me was that I couldn't sympathize with the characters. Peter Parker is definitely not a hero to me, therefore the movie was meaningless. I should have spent my money on something probably more entertaining even though retarded, like Dodgeball..... at least I might have laughed.
  21. I was just watching an interview on tv with the cast of Spiderman, and the director was complaining that in all the Marvel comic characters, he couldn't find one that would or could be truly selfish, in the popular term of one who destroys others in attaining personal goals.... Then someone suggested Dr.Octopus to him.... Of course, he's a scientist.

    Canada

Canuck, Are you an Objectivist??? A fellow canadian, yet much less proud. p.s. I hate how Canadians can never back up why they love Canada, except for the fact that it isn't the United States. This country chose not to go to war, because no one initiated force against us! And in my opinion, even if someone did, we'd just sit back and invite them in. I am really curious to know the standard you are basing yourself on in saying that Canada is superior to the States. I am basing myself on the standard of life, represented by the Constitution of the United States, in saying that philosophically, the States are superior in the recognition of Individual Rights vs. Canada. The Canadian Charter of Rights is a joke.
