  1. Says the guy who benefitted from statist policies like rent controls, eminent domain, and easy credit. Interestingly, the majority of Trump's political donations have been to Democrats. I listened to the entirety of Trump's embarrassing speech & he seems to be ignorant of the most basic principles of economics. Sorry Donald, you will need more than your arrogance and Daddy Trump's purse-strings to get the Presidency. http://www.smartmoney.com/investing/economy/donald-trump-is-no-capitalist-1302540677772/ ‎"For example, Trump professes to support free trade, yet proposes a 25% tax on imported goods from China to level what he sees as trade imbalances in the global economy. It's a contemptuous proposal which would immediately punish Americans by raising the price on virtually everything we buy. He has also called for regulators to stop European stock operator Deutsche Börse's ( DBOEY ) planned $9.5 billion buyout of the NYSE Euronext ( NYX: 37.85, +0.26, +0.69% ) , telling Fox Business Network, "I don't want foreign countries owning the New York Stock Exchange." If he was the president, he added, he "wouldn't even have allowed the discussions to take place." In a capitalist country, shareholders make that kind of decision, not regulators . Trump sees a clear role for government picking winners and losers in the economy, just the same as the previous presidents he claims to critique. On top of that, he has pushed for a one-time 14.25% tax on the rich as a means of supplementing funding for Social Security and Medicaid, along with universal health care . Philosophically, those positions are indistinguishable from the anti-capitalist political establishment now in power." So to answer the question: What would Ayn Rand think of such a man? She would loathe him.
  2. I have a feeling if they are able to travel great distances through space (lest we forget how FAR we actually are from achieving that ourselves) and they have the mindset that they need to be in conflict with us that they most likely have technology that absolutely dwarfs ours and so if they have visited we probably weren't aware of their presence and their military technology would obliterate our own.

  4. Gary Johnson to launch 2012 presidential bid in April http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51993.html http://reason.com/archives/2001/01/01/americas-most-dangerous-politi His official website for his political organization: http://ouramericainitiative.com/ Governor Gary Johnson’s “Seven Principles of Good Government.” “government only needs to ensure that no one is harmful to anyone else.” 1. Become reality driven. Don’t kid yourself or others. Find out what’s what and base your decisions and actions on that. 2. Always be honest and tell the truth. It’s extremely difficult to do any damage to anybody when you are willing to tell the truth–regardless of the consequences. 3. Always do what’s right and fair. Remember, the more you actually accomplish, the louder your critics become. You’ve got to learn to ignore your critics. You’ve got to continue to do what you think is right. You’ve got to maintain your integrity. 4. Determine your goal, develop a plan to reach that goal, and then act. Don’t procrastinate. 5. Make sure everybody who ought to know what you’re doing knows what you’re doing. Communicate. 6. Don’t hesitate to deliver bad news. There is always time to salvage things. There is always time to fix things. Henry Kissinger said that anything that can be revealed eventually should be revealed immediately. 7. Last, be willing to do whatever it takes to get your job done. If you’ve got a job that you don’t love enough to do what it takes to get your job done, then quit and get one that you do love, and then make a difference. In the late 1990′s, Gary Johnson was probably considered the most successful Governor in the United States. He is not to be underestimated in 2012. Many believe his marital problems prevented him from running for President in 2004 (he refused to endorse President Bush). Johnson endorsed Ron Paul in 2008 and is poised to attract most of Paul’s supporters in 2012. Unlike Congressman Paul, Johnson is a baby-boomer, has a softer delivery and a successful track-record of governing on his resume. Governor Johnson has an extremely interesting and attractive biography. Some of Gary Johnson’s accomplishments as Governor: During his tenure, New Mexico experienced the longest period without a tax-increase in the state’s entire history. He cut the rate of government growth in half, left the New Mexico state government with a budget surplus and 1000 fewer employees (without firing anyone), privatized half of the prisons in the state, brought a state-wide school voucher system to New Mexico. Vetoed 750 bills (more than all the vetoes of the other 49 Governors in the country at that time, combined) with only 2 overrides, earning him the nickname Gary “Veto” Johnson. In 1999, Johnson became the highest-ranking elected official in the United States to advocate the legalization of drugs. Shifted Medicaid to managed care. Gary Johnson is a Republican and serves as the Honorary Chairman of the Our America Initiative. He has been an outspoken advocate for efficient government, lower taxes, winning the war on drug abuse, protection of civil liberties, revitalization of the economy and promoting entrepreneurship and privatization. He was born on January 1, 1953 and attended the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque from 1971 to 1975, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While in college, Gary Johnson earned money as a door-to-door handyman. His success in this area prompted him to start his own construction business, Big J Enterprises, which was founded in 1976. Johnson grew the company into a multi-million dollar corporation that employed over 1000 people in 1994. When he sold Big J in 1999, no employee lost his job and the company remains very successful to this day. In 1994, Johnson was elected Governor of New Mexico despite having little experience in politics. He defeated the incumbent Democratic Governor Bruce King in the general election as well as a former Republican Governor in the primary election. In 1998, Johnson was re-elected as governor, defeating Democratic Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez by a 55% to 45% margin. As Governor of New Mexico, Johnson was known for his common-sense business approach to governing. He eliminated New Mexico’s budget deficit, cut the rate of growth in state government in half and privatized half of the state prisons. Johnson also shifted state Medicaid to managed care (which led to better healthcare by creating a statewide healthcare network that previously did not exist and which saved money) and reduced state employees by over 1000, with no firings. During his term, New Mexico experienced the longest period without a tax increase in the state’s history. While in office, Governor Johnson vetoed 750 bills (which is about equal to all the combined vetoes of the other 49 Governors in the country at the time ) and thousands of line item vetoed bills. Gary Johnson was term limited and could not run for a third consecutive term as Governor in 2002. He currently lives in New Mexico and has remained very active, competing in numerous athletic competitions. He is an avid skier, adventurer, and bicyclist who abstains from alcohol. In 2003, he climbed Mount Everest with a BROKEN LEG. He also competed in the recent Iowa RAGBRAI a non-competitive bicycle ride across Iowa that draws recreational riders from across the United States and overseas. The length of the route averages 472 miles. Johnson was raised Lutheran and throughout his life has attempted to live according to those Christian principles. He considers his spirituality to be an important aspect of his personal foundation. Gary Johnson has two grown children. ISSUE POSITIONS: Economics: See videos on website. Laissez-faire. Civil Rights: Pro-choice Pro-Gay Marriage Pro-Prostitution Social Issues: Pro-Marijuana Anti-Drugwar Foreign Policy: Cut defense budget to sensible levels to assist with debt. Cut down on unnecessary foreign bases. (I believe we have something like 700+?) Leave Iraq Leave Afghanistan Fight where we really need to fight. Defend ourselves from terrorism. Pro-relationship with Israel. Believes they have right to exist, should be given military aid if it is needed. Immigration Plan: http://www.420magazine.com/forums/international-cannabis-news/123139-governor-gary-johnson-unveils-six-point-plan-effective-immigration-reform.html Governor Johnson's immigration proposal focuses on the following six key points: 1. Establish real and cost-effective border security. - Continue to encourage and allow legal immigration. - Support current border deterrents and security measures, with an understanding of the low cost benefit analysis of these methods. 2. Create a temporary guest worker program that makes sense. -Expand and streamline a market-based temporary guest worker program. -Enact an application and tracking procedure for guest workers, such as an e-verify system. Procedures must be quick, simple and efficient in providing documentation information, and must meet the needs of both employers and willing workers. -Require guest workers to not only pay income taxes, but provide proof of adequate health care coverage through insurance, secured savings programs, bonds, or a combination thereof. -Allow spouses and dependents to enter the U.S. with guest workers, but only with proof of adequate health coverage and subject to the same background checks and health requirements. 3. Impose meaningful enforcement of immigration laws. -Establish procedures and devote the resources to actually identify illegal immigrants and deport them. Implement a "one strike, you're out" policy toward illegal immigrants with regard to future eligibility for guest worker programs. -Impose and enforce sanctions and fines for noncompliance with immigration laws by employers that are sufficiently costly, ensuring that the risks simply are not worth the rewards. 4. Enact a reality-based process for current illegal workers to earn legal status. -Allow a two-year grace period during which illegal immigrants already in the U.S. can come forward, pay any taxes owed, provide proof of consistent employment, pass a criminal background check, and apply for guest worker status. 5. Reduce border crime. -Address the root cause of most border crime by legalizing marijuana, thereby removing 70% of the current cross-border illegal drug trade and replacing cartel and prohibition-related violence with legal, regulated and nonviolent commerce. 6. Achieve a better working relationship with Mexico. -Stimulate cross-border investment through a robust, above-board and legal guest worker program. -Strengthen the Mexican government by dramatically weakening the cartels through the legalization of marijuana. -Aggressively negotiate mutually beneficial agreements with Mexico regarding such issues as funds transfers, taxation of income earned in the U.S. by guest workers, and deportation and incarceration of Mexican nationals arrested in the United States.
  5. It was simply something I recently came across. If you have better attacks by Sam Harris I would appreciate a link to them, however it's not necessary if you don't want to have to find them again. I agree that people such as Harris, Dawkins, Hitchens have a minimal effect on Christians, but it sure is good for athiest circle-jerking and a general appreciation for intelligent people being willing to tell it like it is.
  6. I believe they have only banned the covering of the face in public, not the garments themselves.
  7. The People's Republic my ass. They have been cracking down a lot more lately. There has been zero tolerance the last few months for any form of dissent, and then we have these ridiculous laws popping up like the banning of reincarnation and time-travel movies. http://www.newser.com/story/116100/china-detains-169-congregants-of-protestant-church-shouwang-for-praying-in-public.html

  9. Nice to meet you. I think you will be fairly comfortable here. There are a number of us that are in the younger ages. I am 22 at the end of this April, however there are a good handful of people that are within the 16-22 age that roam about here. A good few of the younger ones frequent the chatroom (top right corner0 along with myself pretty frequently as well. If you have a facebook, and are into general networking, I have found it to be quite helpful and enjoyable for myself to facebook friend a lot of Objectivists and as a result we have conversations more often and I see quite a bit of related news regarding current events that I would not have been aware of otherwise. If you are interested in doing so send me a private message and I can link you to my facebook account and perhaps hook you up with a few other Objectivists. The Objectivist "society' is quite unique and varied, from 15 year olds in Texas to Lawyers, Doctors, ex-MIT/Harvard students, College Professors, Businessmen, Construction Workers, entrepreneurs, plumbers and so on.. we have a fair number of people from New Zealand, Sweden, Australia and the like that I have encountered. We aren't the largest group but there is more than enough "character" and diversity to make up for it and with the rise of the internet and other mediums it has made it much easier for us to connect together. May I ask what you have read? That is usually a good way for us to get an idea of where exactly you are at knowledge wise. Again, nice to have you here.
  10. I contacted Duncan Scott through the facebook page for the film. The conversation was as follows: So it appears the Ayn Rand Institute is, at the very least, aware of it's development, as is The Atlas Society.
  11. Reason.com has written up a piece for the upcoming Atlas Shrugged movie. I believe a month or so ago one of their writers saw an early screening and gave it a lukewarm review much like Yaron Brook et al. At any rate, the main reason I bring up this article is because it has a section on page 3 titled "All the Objectivists Are Going to Fucking Hate Me" http://reason.com/archives/2011/04/08/atlas-shrugged-the-movie/2

  13. If I am not mistaken, he worked side by side with Ayn Rand on the We the Living revision (I read a very lengthy, I think 4-5 page article once by the director about specific parts within the movie and Ayn Rand's remarks throughout the entire creation process, which was very interesting). I cannot recall if this is this man or not but I am leaning towards that being the case. He has, apparently, made some other excellent documentaries/works before and he did state that the money would in part be for in-depth research purposes. Obviously, his actual knowledge I cannot be certain of, but I am more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt than those idiots making the movie that can't pronounce her name and think that free market Capitalism means the powerful will exploit the lowly and that the world is full of grays, all paraphrased quotes from the AS director on video. I am going to guess that if either institute decided to give him money that they would have vetted him first, which is also why I decided to suggest (on facebook) he check with them if he hasn't done so already to assist with his funding needs. I personally found that Ayn Rand Sense of Life documentary to be the most boring documentary I have ever seen and I almost fell asleep on two occasions while watching it. I can only imagine the reaction to it by a non-Objectivist. So, I would be quite excited to see a well-done documentary of this nature coming out along with ARI's in the works Atlas Shrugged documentary.
  14. It says he is looking for about $33,000 more than what he currently has. I wonder if the ARI was made aware of this if they would throw some money his way?
  15. I, and several others, have come up with the idea before of making a fact and myth type of sheet refuting all of these arguments in detail with citations (since quite often the same things are brought up again and again). This would be useful not only to post in articles such as this via a link in the comment section, but also to give to people that are new to Objectivism, perhaps, since many of them incidentally fall into these traps and have to get clarification on them from Objectivists. Unfortunately those project threads always died the day they were posted pretty m \uch.
  16. That is pretty cool. Also, related to pool. I didn't really ever play myself until a year before college. Most people, in my experience, are not only stunned when you don't know how to play (and play decently well), but act like assholes about it, so it's nice to know there are people that still understand that not everyone has learned how to do things like they have, or as well, that is not the normal attitude in the college environment from what I have gathered. Also, that is one crazy tie Dawkins has on.
  17. Even if he wasn't (which IS plausible) he is still completely wrong since his father was not practicing Objectivism, but rather mixed his own little philosophy of, apparently, hedonism/nietzschean individualism and other behaviors together, and then replaced his Catholic religious zealousy with Objectivism, except he chose not to practice or understand Objectivism, but only to use it in name, rather than content, because doing so justified his own actions and beliefs, which were wrong. Unfortunately, and this comes at no surprise, the vast majority of people are taking the bait, as is normally the case with these types of articles. Gigantic circlejerk in the comments section as always. As far as Salon, while most of it is not high quality, as you mentioned, one should be careful not to overgeneralize. I read Glenn Greenwald's works fairly often and they are always exceptionally well done even if I don't always agree with him.
  18. I really hate articles like this. Whats more, I really hate that such negative special treatment is given to Ayn Rand all of the time. http://www.salon.com/life/feature/2011/04/04/my_father_the_objectivist/index.html

  21. Who had the cojones to downvote my post? How can you even argue with what I said? You would have to be willfully ignorant to events in the last year, no less in the last few decades.
  22. I am curious what your basis for this opinion is. Many people have the opposite one (I am not just referring to Liberals, that hate big banks in general).
